McLaren and Honda set to reunite?

No reason why McLaren couldn't work in partnership with Honda to develop an engine that is then branded as a McLaren... and then sold to other teams?.

Why would Honda want to do this - if they produce the engine they would want the prestige of being with McLaren again surely?

Its been done before Im sure - but I just cant see why Honda would do it with a leading team

its a japanese company we all know what happens when they dont end up with what they expected...

you cant apply it to all current engine manufactures either...

Well the French have ran away quite a few times and returned. Peugeot did one after looking promising for a small while. BMW realised they also made a mistake going alone and bolted.

Ity won't be long before Mercedes realise the money isn't giving a return and either do the same as BMW or just become a supplier again.

Once Mclaren bought back and paid the final installments to Mercedes it will be interesting how long they continue to suffer mediocrity when they are financing it themselves.

After watching the program the other night about the McLaren factory it'd seem they are more than capable of producing their own engines. I'd still love Honda to return with McLaren but if they are going to they HAVE to have one of the best engines on the grid or the whole exercise will be completely pointless to the point where it would just be embarassing.

And this is the point. Mclaren won't go with Honda unless they can prove its a top engine. If they can't, they have free choice to go with pretty much anyone else with the possible exception of Ferrari.

If its an "unknown" manufacturer - like Ricardo? (the manufacturer of the MP4-12C engine) then I can fully agree it may well be re-badged as McLaren, totally understandably from everyone's poiint of view

If its a famous brand (Audi, Honda, Peageot...) I cant see how a major manufacturer will agree to rebrand it (unless its internal rebranding like Mugen instead of Honda for eg)

Either way will be interesting times

Cosworth is an option - its implementation in the Williams hasn't been too bad at all. Much better than the other teams it initially supplied.

Mugen is not a brand of Honda. It is a completely separate company, all be it owned by the son of a major shareholder in Honda, but nevertheless the Honda Corporation have no ownership or management interest in Mugen at all.

Cant see any way a leading team will descend to the choice of average Cosworth

I dont know why Williams have been so average, maybe it isnt just the engine but this is without doubt SOME of the reason.

You said it yourself "....hasnt been too bad" - this isnt where McLaren will want to aim for :)

There is a connection (even if Mugen "just" tune the original Honda, both trademarks could easily appear on an F1 engine again) that will allow it to happen thats all I was really meaning - think we are getting down to semantics personally. :)

We have absolutely no idea if the V6 Cosworth engine would be 'average'. It could be epic, or it could be utterly useless, but we will have to see.

The V6 format is a clean slate for everyone, so there is the potential for the current pecking order of engine suppliers to be completely thrown up in the air.

What we do know is that PURE and Cosworth were the first two companies to commit to making 2014 spec engines, with both of them saying they wanted to be the first to have their engine on a dyno and testing.

Ok fair point - but I dont see why they would make an amazing engine for the next implementation when they cant make an amazing one for the current set of rules
