why isn't there a universal release for all cars? By releasing early does this not give an opportunity for other manufacturers to copy designs?

It doesn't matter, what you've seen today isn't the car which will start the first race.

At this point, anything that were copied from todays launch, would need to be designed and fabricated, and it would be the middle of next month before it were even close to being ready to put on a car for testing.

Doubtful, the last few RB noses have hardly been pretty, and no way Newey would compromise aero. "Ugly" is just the best way to go with these rules.

They won't put the proper wings on (and any other trick bodywork pieces) until testing starts.

I really don't care about the front tip of the nose, as long as she's fast, that's all that matters. 99 percent of the car is stunning anyway imo.

Are the cars shorter this year? I don't know if it's the angle of the camera but that McLaren looks a lot shorter than last years car.

I think they are meant to be considerably shorter - seem to recall a mock up earlier in the winter showing to what degree

I haven't seen anything in the rules about shorter cars, the front wing is narrower and the minimum weight has increased, but by less than the drive train weight increase.

A shorter car will be seen as less safe for the driver so I suspect that isn't happening.
