Hey guys,

I would just like your thoughts on which to study.
Obviously MCSA is old and being retired yet a lot of businesses still use the products.
MCITP is the new stuff and will future proof me for a while.

Is it worth my while just doing the MCITP and skipping MCSA?
My mind is set on the MCITP but I would appreciate your views :)

Thanks,
Em

If your mind is set on the MCITP then do the MCITP and if you feel like it's not enough after you've done it, then perhaps do the MCSA.

MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician 7
Exam 70-680
Exam 70-685

&

MCITP: Server Administrator
Exam 70-640
Exam 70-642
Exam 70-646

Is what I'm aiming for.

I would go MCITP. A lot of the stuff in Server 2008+ is not too dissimilar to older Server platforms. You will definitely know the theory, even if the practical application is a little different.

MCITP every time, companies might ask for MCSA but I'm willing to bet most of them are doing so just because that's what they always have asked for. They've just not updated things to specify the new cert.

Hell most people here are unable to say what it is they want to do (as above, there are many different MCITP routes!) :p

Plus as said a lot of it is still relevant to the older platforms.

Well currently I'm studying with xp and server '03 at college. I could get my XP desktop support exam easily (free exam attempt with dreamspark) and have a good knowledge of '03.
So I guess the itp is the best!

Im working through an MCSE 2003 at the mo purely because it is based on platforms that I work with at the moment (bar the Windows 7 & Exchange 2007 exams I've done), but I will be upgrading it asap as well.

The way I see it is that it's another notch on the belt plus there is plenty of time to upgrade before the '08 stuff becomes more commonplace :)

Either way good luck and get those labs going!

Go for the MS books. They are very well written and generally ensure they target all the information you will be tested on in the exam.

Hmm im reading reviews on the first micrososft book (70-680) and they say things like this:
The book has so many spelling mistakes, erroneous characters (IN SYSTEM COMMANDS!!) which can set you back hours and days in troubleshooting until you find them. I have a whole questions/answers part printed in my book BACK TO FRONT! This leads to a fun experience trying to work out if you have studied the chapter or not.

I cannot stress how much this book needs to be updated, some sections were laughable.

Iv read many reviews saying the same thing.

Would you still say are the best option?

Cheers,
Em

It depends really, I am doing Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance, I read all the reviews about the actual book having mistakes and it does have some good ones, however to counter that I also bought another book which was from much more a business perspective which gives reasons why you are doing all the tasks, rather than just doing them.

Don't forget in the offical books you also get a CD which contains software and practice exams which is worth the price of the books alone.

Good luck I have done 70-640 but I have now decided to take a career path towards SQL server instead.

I have got the CBT Nugget videos now to go hand in hand with the textbook for studying.
Would you say that should suffice?
