I'm not sure I'm a fan of this current trend of pubs/restaurants serving almost everything up on a block of wood.

I'm not sure where it all initially originated from (I'm guessing an american burger style place) but I find it a bit crap.

Also I don't think a block of wood that's had knives and forks digging into it is going to be as hygienic as a plate, as all the grooves will just harbour any dirt, and also I find that they are just more faffy to eat off of.

Am I just being an old duffer here? lol.

Big crisp white plates with a lip around the edge to keep my food contained is definitely my preference.

Looks pretty but I've got to agree on the general ease of use they're a pain in the arse as all my chips scoot off the side!

Don't care either way.

Wood is naturally anti-bacterial, so that isn't really an issue.
You don't need a lip to contain most food. And wooden boards are only used on a handful of things. Deep fried/burger type stuff.
Or smoke fish type things and sometimes steak. Only the teak needs cutting.

They're rubbish for soup.

Or they can always stick the soup on a load of bread.

I think the worst thing since the wooden plate is chips coming in them stupid little pretend deep frying baskets and you get a whole 4 chips in it

really ****es me off. GIMME MOAR CHIPS

Used to eat a lot in a pub that served their stuff on a cast iron skillet that was still about 200oC many burnt fingers....

Could hear the food coming, sizzling its way towards you :P

My main gripe with wooden boards for serving food is that stuff goes colder quicker on wood compared to a hot plate. Aside from that, I think it's quite nice.

I blame the influx of men based trendy trendy cooks off the telly with more presentation gone into the food than the actual food. Local place here serves McCain wedges off a slate. Why!
