Exactly the whole region was all bliss and harmony before we got there. They all got along so famously. Africa too - they used to have nice peaceful parties before colonisation.
What you're forgetting though is religion was invented for that very purpose you describe. It's been used a tool for centuries for one set of people who are (or in some cases aren't but claim to be) oppressed by another to garner support and encourage people to fight for that religious cause.
Not all religions have been subverted for political use and I don't believe any of them were started with that intention.
Some are just ways to live a life.
That said, if Islam were wiped off the planet, the human race might just survive a bit longer.

Yes, there were wars before1914. Guess what - Europe was still having them after that. And worse ones. No-one said it was all sweetness and light, but a) promising exactly the same plot of land to two different groups at the same time, and b) cutting a continent into countries with a ruler, taking no account of the reality of tribal settled areas, led to much of the world's conflict since 1945. If (say) you take a tribe that has come to a largely honoured truce with another tribe across the river, then put a third of tribe A and two thirds of tribe B into one country, what do you suppose is going to happen once you stop them uniting to hate you? Well, take a look at the Rwandan Genocide to get a clue.
