Is there much of a difference between sata 2 and 3 on mechanical drives ? i know there is on ssd's but was wondering if id notice a difference going from a WD green 750GB sata 2 to a WD caviar black 1TB sata 3 ?

Considering the read/write times are limited by the spin speed, no there won't be. HDDs can't even saturate SATA 2 yet, so SATA 3 ones are just marketting gimmicks. But SATA 3 HDDs seem to be slowly replacing SATA 2 ones anyway :p.

You can add the black for more storage if you need it, if you don't, stick with what you have.

As said there's no difference.

If you are getting a new drive, and want to save some cash, then get a Samsung F3 1TB.

As fast as the WD Black just a shorter warranty.
