Mechanical keyboard suggestions?

I'm currently using a series 1 Logitech G15, and whilst it's served me well for a long time, I'm thinking that perhaps I'd like to go with a mechanical replacement. I primarily play RPGs/MMOs, with the odd occasional FPS. I also am in the process of writing a novel, so am used to typing for a few hours at a time. Whilst the G15 has been fine for this in the main, I'd like a better feel to my typing.

Noise is a bit of an issue, I share my home office with my wife, and don't want to disturb her too much when typing. Consequently, I'm thinking that Cherry MX Brown switches might suit.

I don't use the screen on the G15 much, mainly just for a clock and occasionally for seeing who is talking during a MMO session, so am not too worried by the loss of that. I do occasionally use the macro keys, but certainly do not need 18 of them! I use the media controls all the time, so would like to have a keyboard with them. And the two USB ports are very useful, so it'd be great to keep those too.

So... which mechanical keyboard might suit? Anyone else had any experience of moving from the G15 to a mechanical keyboard? What did you end up missing?

Any answers appreciated.

I'd suggest geekhack, There's nothing they don't know about keyboards
I'd warn you though, I went looking for a mechanical keyboard and they talked me into building my own lol

I have a friend with reds, who also types quite a lot, and plays similar games, and he reckons that the reds don't offer enough feedback when typing. I quite like the idea of the tactile bump on the browns.

At the moment, I'm tending towards the Corsair K70 or the Gigabyte Aivia Osmium. More likely the former, cos I'm a sucker for its aesthetic.

Ducky Shine III here with Brown switches.

There is an audible clack when the keys bottom out so I'll fit some O rings at some point (on offer today) but typing feels very good otherwise (spend about 2 hours a week writing for my RPG group). Mostly an RPG and FPS gamer too.

+1 to ducky with brown, very nice, great middle ground
full typing blues or topre are best.

I would say reds aren't nice to type on, great response for gaming, but mmo&RPG don't really need twitch responses

I've got a Ducky Shine II with Cherry MX Red switches and the o-ring dampeners and it's amazing to type on. Admittedly I haven't tried other mechanical switches so not sure how it compares but it's fantastic compared to a standard keyboard, and you get those twitch responses too.

How on earth are reds not nice to type on. You press the key down and it registers. It's literally as simple as keyboards come. There's no tactile feedback or click like blues or browns, but since when is that the defining feature of "nice"?

Well admittedly it's mostly down to opinion, but with reds there's no indication of actuation point which causes you to bottom out the key when you type, this can cause long term damage to the fingers if you type for extended periods (9-10 hours typing a day), obviously it takes years for the damage to add up but when it does it's not nice one bit.

That being said reds are great for chat/games, but when typing a lot reds aren't the best.
gropingmantis is right about the Nonsense! Buckling Spring or Greens. but of the mainstream keyboards I'd say blues or topre, though I personally like brown at home, topre I've never really got into

I agree but i suppose it depends on how you type etc :)
