Hi All,

Looking to pull all me gear together. Currently got all my movies etc on my main rig upstairs. I then stream to my Xbox. It’s not bad but think a media PC would be a lot better. I’ve also got all my lighting and electric on remote control.

Looking to build a media PC capable of holding all my media, might want to stream HD at some point and be able to control of my remote hardware. I’ve got the RF receiver and transmitter so that’s sorted. Might use Homeseer or Grinder, not sure yet. What I need to look at is what sort of power my PC needs.

It’ll be under the stairs so doesn’t need to be compact. I’ve been poking around so old bits littering my house and this is what ive found -

Abit BE7 raid mobo
2.4 P4 chip
2 x 512 PC2100 Ram
ATI 9800 SE AIW
5.1 sound blaster live digital sound card
340 watt psu

Could I do it with this or am I asking to much. Just moved into a new place so money is tight but I could but a few bits if needed

What you think?

Yeah, don't see why not!

It's basically going to act as a file server and run a few light-weight programs.

A future consideration might be power consumption, as you're going to be running it 24/7.

Cheers Engram. PSU is a fair point. I'll probably be using sleep mode a lot and with it being used as a reciever an dtransmitter i guess it'll be awake a fair bit. Is there such a think as 'energy saving' PSU? My current PSU could be 7+ years old so im sure a newer one would be better than nothing.

Ive also been reading about what OS to use. Gone stick with windows of some form and Windows 7 is looking good. Any reason why i shouldnt?

You only have a gig of ram ?

Win 7 might be a bit chuggy with that although its not too bad on my netbook with 1.5 gig.

Maybe a quick look on members market or any online auction might turn up some cheap as chips higher density stuff.

I don't think you'll be able to do anything HD with that rig but otherwise it's a top idea

Hi mate just read your post, and i am trying to stream my films to my xbox aswell. I have it all connected and it will let me access my pictures and music but not my videos, did you have any problems setting it up i have all my dvds put on my pc via dvd shrink in VTS format. Thanks in advance for any help.

just about to buy a DVI to HDMI cable when the guy said there were many versions. DVI-I and DVI-D (and A but dont need that). Ive got a DVI-D lead. how can i tell if its correct?

@ geordie - What cabling are you using? going to tv or monitor?

@ Nemesis - Surely you could just ask him which one you'll be able to play a bluray over?
