A friend at work is having some problems with Media Player on his laptop.

When ever he tries to play a video all he gets sound (not video just a black/blank screen where the video would be). At first i though poss a codec missing buut it happens with all videos (which if he loads into QuickTime they play fine.).

Tried to install Windows Media Player 11 and it installs gets right to the end and then says media player cant install please restart and try again (or something similar) with the error code C00D2AFB MS website lists no help for the code.

But searching google seems a lot of people have the some problem but could find any solutions.

We then tried to install it via Windows Update site (of which it also downloaded IE7).

It sits there installing both of them then again right at the end says that both IE7 and WMP11 could not be installed.

So we tried to reinstall WMP10 by downloading it from the MS site and that gies a "Not compatiable with this version of windows" error message when the setup file for it is run

Hes running Windows XP home.

Anyone here had any similar problems or know what could be causing this to happen.

after checking the wmp11 log files it seems that its registry permissions that are causing the problems.

Foudn the ones that are causing it and cant change permissions on the etc.

Found a program called Dial-a-Fix which tries to repair resistry permission problems, and loking at its log gile it managed to repair some but not the ones we needed (a few of them in the media player keys).

Anyone know of any other ways of repairing registry permissions
