Ok thats my Appartments set up- give or take a load more tablets and radio and other devices.

Im quite a noob at all this but does this work ?

If i get an external USB3 Hard Drive plug it into the routers port, share it will all my other devices be able to access the " porn" it contains ?

All of the devices will be using PLEX, or if you have a better alternative please suggest. THIS SHOULD BE FINE WITH NO PCS Switched ON ?

Im not sure the Chromecast will work is there something i can flash onto it to give it PLEX too ?

IS it a viable setup or should i just look into a NAS ? I can probably get a 2TB one on the cheap, maybe even cheaper than a 2TB external drive... It seems the best answer to me maybe......??

Am i understanding this correctly or am i fundamentally missing something.

If the router has file sharing enabled pretty sure the video files will just show in windows media player without plex.

External drive will been shown as a network drive in Windows. Any DNLA compatible device will be able to stream from it.

Yes but what about the Chromecast will that be able to do anuthing

Chromecast still depends on your phone/pc so if the app supports casting and can connect to a network drive, then yes. Plex I know can do this but I haven't really given it a go.

Yeah i guess all the TV on chromecast will be run via the phone or a tablet ill dedicate to the bedroom!

Good point thanks for the help thinking this through !
