Hi,
My brother is looking for an external hard drive which can play media files directly through a TV. His problem is that many of the videos are in unusual formats. Can someone suggest the best external media hard drive for playing the widest range of formats? He's looking for between 500GB and 1TB, price doesn't matter too much.

Thanks guys!

No such thing really. You need some sort of device to read the data and munge it into a TV signal. I use a PS3 for this but there are alternatives.

There is, it's just a bit of a mine field as to which ones will play which formats. Was hoping someone in the know would have some advice as to which is the best one. A google search for "Media harddrive" turns up a few examples.

What about something like a Popcorn Hour A-110 plus a sata drive to put into it. Alternatively a WDTV and a USB hard drive. They both play a wide variety of file formats.
