my original plan to cable my pc to tv has been squashed and now thinking of going for a media streamer, iv been having a look on the net and found some interesting ones, my budget is £100 and it MUST have the following:

Optical out
support .mkv and other community friendly formats @1080p
have at least a lan (wireless not so bothered about)

iv been looking at the following:
Asus O!Play HDP-R1
Western Digital WD-TV Live

is the wd tv live worth the extra £10 over the asus? any other devices or are these pretty much the best out their out the mo?

I take it from the sig it's probably a no ;)

To be honest I think PS3 media server can stream to various other devices now, possibly even the 360?

No experience of the O!Play but the WD TV Live was quite good and had everything you have on your list.

Meh, I have sigs turned off.

I think you are right about the 360 streaming though, sure I saw something in the notes of the latest version about it.

Sumvision Cyclone MKV Adaptor V2 (or the enclosure if you want an internal HDD)

Ticks all the boxes you have specified.

Popcorn hour media player, pretty good.
Can stream footie / web content with clever use of vlc and a lot of patience setting it up.

i dont think some of you actually read the first post?
Popcorn hour media player? at £180 min how does that fit into a £100 budget lol?

as for ps3/360 i do have both but they dont support optical out when streaming and would hardly play most of the formats i want too.

anyway i decided on the wdtv live today so it will arrive tomorrow
