I'm after something to stream and maybe store if need be media throughout my house.

I have a PC, Virgin Super Hub and Samsung Smart TV. I used to use Samsung link before I upgraded to Windows 10, now the software seems to break after every reboot and I have to download and reinstall each time to play a film.
Windows 10 - Right click and send to TV works OK but cuts the last 30-60 seconds off the end of everything.
My Samsung Tab S works lovely but doesn't have the storage.

So I want something to make this simple task simple.

What is there out there, will a 500gig Nvidia shield be up to the job, must be able to do 1080p without buffering.

Easiest way woud be to buy a chromecast for a few quid, and download PLEX to your PC (as aserver) and phone. You can then use your phone as a remote for the chromecast/plex, and to stream whatever you like.

It's very easy to set up and you can easily stream movies and tv with it, as well as anything chromecast normally does, like streaming a browser window, iplayer etc. It even looks professional and streams with great quality.

I realise this isnt really a hardware solution but its a damn good one!

Almost exactly the set up I have. Works flawlessly.

Do I need to have the Chrome device for this to work?

Just looked a Plex, seems ok do I need the monthly subscription for this to work though?

Chromecast is only about £20, you do indeed need it. Its just a small device that plugs nito a HDMI port, and gets power from USB.

You dont need the subscription to PLEX. The server is free and the app is either free or a pound or two.

Well worth it - you wont regret it. Streams at 1080p and even pulls over 5.1 audio. You even get a gorgeous selector on the app with proper covers and everything.

Just make sure you have a good router - not sure the Virgin Superhub qualifies :p

Wifi on the virgin isn't the best, but its what I use and works fine. I should note that the PC is wired in though (albeit via powerline). No buffering and works fine.

As an aside, if your PC is in another room and struggling for wifi sgnal, the powerline adapters work brilliantly - I get almost the full 60mbps of my cable and decent pings for gaming.

Ok so, downloaded the app on my computer, created an account. Downloaded app on phone and app on TV, both can see the computer.
However I have to refresh the PC Plex server to see the new entered videos on my phone or TV, and I cannot play to my TV from the computer or phone I have to go on the TV app to do this.

If you're not using the chromecast you probably can't use the app from your phone to act as a selector. I've no experience with the smart TV so I can't assist there.

It sounds like you have the media server working and it will indeed need to be refreshed when you add new media to it. I think there is a settings to automatically update it every so often though.

When I add media I tend to chuck it in the relevant folders and just hit a manual update there and then, dead easy. :)
