It won't be catchup and Canikon won't go into MF. The backs may gradually grow more affordable but the lenses won't, and while a few more pros may go into medium format, Hasselblad and the 645D systems are already established there.

35mm presents a sweet spot for IQ, depth of field and versatility. The additional detail afforded by medium format cameras is generally nothing you can notice in anything that isn't substantially larger than a magazine print without insane cropping.

The a77 has done well so far, if Sony start keeping their sensors to themselves rather than supplying Nikon with them, then Nikon will get left in very awkward water and Sony will have the best sensors in the market.

Well Canon are not ruling out the possibility of entering the MF market.

I also don't rule out the possibility of cheaper and wider aperture MF lenses once MF becomes attainable and mass produced. The current MF bodies suck to use, Leica's S20 has given a glimps of what things might look like once Canon/Nikon/Sony enter the market.

Personally I'm looking forward to some wide angle bokeh without resorting to the Brenizer method.
