Hi,

Wondering what peoples thoughts were on the Megahalems cooler? I'm looking to upgrade from stock and have a couple of SP fans I'm not using that I can fit to it easily.

The only thing putting me off is the price! Why is the Red version so much more expensive that the others? It would however, look absolutely awesome.

I have a 450d case with G.Skill Sniper RAM, if anyone has any other suggestions. I'd be tempted by Noctua, if only the fans were a different colour!

Cheers,

Ned.

Agree, seems a little odd to me that the black one is £10 cheaper for what I'm assuming is exactly the same product (??).

Also, does anyone know the difference between the Red/Blue and even Black from the 'Rev C' version? £20 difference between 'Rev C' and Red.

Most reviews people have left on the 'Rev C' are 5 years old??

Do these coolers still punch their weight?

Had one a while back and was pretty impressed with it, (supermega silver and copper model). Less issues with ram clearance compared to the large dual tower design coolers. I eventually replaced mine with an alpenfohn k2.

I've had two or three of them over the years, cant comment on the coloured ones, but the silver ones that I have had both look and perform really well :)

i just got nh d15, i know its a bit pricey, but the performance is amazing even with the fans set to really low rpm.
One of the main benefits of the nh d15 is it is rediculously easy to mount, and you get two top notch heatsink fans with it, worth nearly £20 each, plus a big syringe of high quality thermal paste that applies easily
i have no experience with the megahalems. The prolimatech one that i think looks cool is the dual tower one (the genesis) where the second tower is horizontal above the ram. Dunno whether this is an effective cooler, but it looks damn cool lol
kinda cool:

Hi,

Yeah seen the Genesis, looks crazy! Does it work well?? Noticed a Rev C going second hand so might have a dabble if the price is right. Silver would work well with my black/red SP fans!

I'm pretty unsure on the performance, i looked at it before i got my nh d15. Some tests have it doing really well, like the one at silent pc review. Others have it as mid to top. So not sure. My current build is all noctua poo brown fans and my window faces the wall so im not bothered lol.
But if i built again and made a cool looking pc id probably get a genesis with led fans lol.

OC Techlabs seem to rate the Genesis so that says something, might have a Google and see if I can find some ratings on them.

How do Noctua fair with a change of fans (seeing as I have two Corsair SP120 I'd like to use) or is there really no point in changing them? If only there was an option to have the black fans!

Also, just checked and the NH-D15 seems like it's right on the limit of what my case could handle height wise, whereas the NH-D14 and Megahalems are both about 7mm under so would be just right.

NH-D14 doesnt seem to be a 1150 socket?

If you look at the second table they rate the genesis as the top dual tower heatsink, when noise and cooling are both taken into account (shows performance at diff fan voltages).
I wouldn't change the fans of the d15 as they are pretty specific 140mm fans with 120mm mounting holes. Would probably be tough to find similar and i doubt 120s would perform as well, but I'm not an expert

Yeah again, I think the Genesis is 165mm and at the limit of the height I can manage with.

Thanks for the pointers!

The reason i didnt get the genesis, is because the performance reviews were varied. This bit tech one put me off as it puts it quite low in comparison to other heatsinks.http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2011/07/12/prolimatech-genesis-review/2

The dark rock pro 3 looks a good option. But is supposedly fidly to mount, it looks great though. Im probably just adding to much confusion now lol. But i reckon bottom line is to look at a lot of performance numbers from different sites for each heatsink/ heatsink+fan combos, as i think prolimatech coolers performance probably varies greatly based on fans used. I know silentpcreview tested the genesis with top notch fans, maybe bit tech didnt.

No worries, hope you find something you like. I think there is a lot of great tower heatsinks out there and you probably cant go wrong with megahalems. But yeah just need to look at the numbers and see what fits. But yeah good fans also help i reckon.

Definitely food for though, yeah. Will do as you suggest and try get a good balance with the help of some performance tests.

The NH-D14 works fine with socket 1150. I just used it on my new build.
