Hey ppl. I wanna make my ram run on 1066 mhz wich the ram actually is. But my problem is that they only run on 400 mhz. And i blaime my MB for the issue.
i'm not interested in overclocking my cpu or anything else. I just want the ram to use theire right amount of speed. i'll try and update the bios if that should do a difference. And if thats the case can anyone give a walk through on how to update the bios since i got NO clue on what i'm doing here. :)

Info about my system is:
MB: Gigabyte EP45-DS3 Rev. 1.0 running bios ver. F8
Cpu:Intel Q9550 2.83 GHz
Ram: 8 GB Corsair XMS2 pc8500 1066 MHz.
GPU: 2x XFX ATi HD 5850 XXX
PSU: NQ 850W.

Hi there, Welcome to the forums :)

You shouldn't need to update the BIOS to do this, as the motherboard will not automatically run RAM that is rated at 1066MHz at this speed - it will run it at a safe default speed until you set it to something else. Hence a BIOS update will not sort this out.

Modern RAM is DDR (double data rate), so data is transferred when the clock is both rising and falling. This means that the actual clockspeed of your current RAM may be 400MHz, but the effective clockspeed is 800MHz. Your RAM is rated to 1066MHz, but this is also the effective clockspeed (533MHz actual). The first thing I would suggest is to go into your BIOS, find the "MB Intelligent Tweaker Page" and the "DRAM Performance Control Section" - then find the "Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)" Option" and enable the first XMP profile - then save and exit. Finally, check CPUZ to see what speed your memory is running at now.

Just to add to one point - the ram runs at the default supported speed of the chipset. By that I mean the P45 Intel chip set that your motherboard uses. Gigabyte (or Asus or EVGA or any motherboard manufacturer) do not determine that, it is the chip set manufacturer who does. So when you look at some X58 motherboards for example you see a list of supported ram speeds of 2000(OC) the OC at the end is the give away. Over Clocked, it is not native supported ram speeds. Hope that helps clear up any possible confusion.

The advice you were given by Cmndr Andi is outstanding and if you follow that you will have no problems.

i ran CPUZ yesterday and it said 333 on the memory. Then while i was waiting for a reply on here i just thought to hell with it.. And i just tryed adjusting the settings in the bios. so i changede voltage on Dram to 2.0V, step to 7-7-7-20 and something called memory multiplier to 3.20B. Then launched CPUZ and now it says memory running @ 533 MHz.
So i'm gonna take my guess on that they should run on the 1066 MHz now.

But thanks for the quick reply to you both..

Hi,

I'm having a similar issue. I was running 3d mark 06 and noticed on the results that my memory was shown as running at 400 MHz and it should be 800 MHz.

I've taken the steps you've listed above. First i used CPUZ and it shows the DRAM Frequency as 401.8 MHz. I then went to the BIOS and chose MB Intelligent Tweaker, the next options weren't quite the same but i chose DRAM configuration and the memory is shown as 4 x 800MHz. There is an option to set memory clock to manual but as it says 800 MHz on auto and i don't know what i'm doing i haven't changed anything. I rebooted and CPUZ still shows 401.8 MHz?

Is there something i should change, can you help?

My system specs are:
MB - Gigabyte MA-790X-UD3P with BIOS F7b
CPU - Phenom 965 125w
RAM - 4x2 GB OCZ DDR2 PC6400 800MHz
PSU - OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w
