I'm nearly there now guys..... one of the final items in the jigsaw is my choice of RAM.

I need maximum compatibility with the Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi and E6600
I definitely want to try overclocking
I want to high-end game

Size-wise I'm sure 2gb will be enough (for now) and budget is pretty limitless, but I do believe in "bang for the buck" and wouldn't want to just get something expensive for the sake of it.

Seeing how I want to overclock, I figure that the "micron" types are the best (Team Xtreme, Cellshock, A-Data). Is one better than the other for my config?

Will it make that much difference if I go for 1000mhz over 800mhz? (think that means 8000 over 6400)?

I assume we're only talking DDR2

If you haven't figured it out already I don't know much!

Team Xtreem would be a very good choice, but so would cellshock, hard choice. I'd personally go with cellshock though seeing as its now the same price.

Interesting to n ote that I've just read somewhere that tests showed (using an E6300) a 15% improvement in performance going from 600mhz to 800mhz but only 2% going from 800mhz to 1000mhz....

So this wouldn't make the extra cost bang for your buck, would it?

If you can run your RAM in 1:1 with your FSB you gain a performance boost because there's less of an overhead. So, if the FSB is at 800Mhz it's just about possible you'll get a 15% performance increase in some bencies going up from 677Mhz. If you then re-introduce the devider and increase the RAM speed (so your FSB is still at 800Mhz) you will only see a small increase.

I suspect this is the descrepancy at your source.

I'd buy some Crucial Ballistix at 667Mhz 3-3-3-15 because you can overclock it and it'll most likely keep pace with your E6600. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=144

Remember that timings don't mean a lot on intel so you can loosen these to gain the clock speeds you want.

An E6600 at 4GHz is 445Mhzish FSB. I recon you can get that RAM up to 445 FSB (900ishMhz) at 5-5-5-15. Anyone done it?

yes that ram could overclock at high levels
I have tried a lot of speeds
at 8-3-3-3 runs at 400mhz
at 18-5-5-5 runs at 530mhz
