Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what is the maximum amount of RAM that can be used by Windows XP 32bit and does this increase with Windows XP 64 bit?

Thx
Binty

It's 4GB including graphics VRAM, caches and other devices. For most people you'll address about 3.2GB if you put in 4GB.

XP64 doesn't have this limit, but I'd suggest going Windows 7 x64 if you're going to change.

I have Win7 64bit and do not like it. The access rights and permissions are a mess along with other things. I am ditching it and going back to XP but just needed to make sure all of my RAM will be available.

Thx for the advice

There is absolutely nothing that XP does better than Windows 7, provided your spec isn't steam driven!

Just because it's different, doesn't mean it's worse.

My I ask what the problem is exactly with regards to the things you have mentioned? Even if some things aren't quite to your liking and it may take a little while for you to get used to some of the changes, I certainly wouldn't install an abomination of an operating system that is Windows XP in favor of Windows 7.

Win 7 access rights and permissions can be adjusted and they're there to protect you and your PC.

Andi.

Vista was a bit overkill with UAC but MS toned it down a lot in 7. As for access rights issues, you have to take ownership of the files/folders.

The answer is that XP64 doesn't have a memory limit that you're going to hit. But which issues is it that you're having with access rights and permissions? It would be much better to fix those issues than to roll back to XP. XP is the past - it won't make the best use of your hardware, and it's coming to the end of its working life. Windows 7 is much more secure and provides a much better user experience.

I could never get my laptop (Lenovo x61) running on XP64. Drivers - including the LAN driver! just seemed to be non existent, or just didn't work.

Win 7 64 bit worked right out of the box.

Just to stick my Oar in ;) I'm totally with Your opinion on Win 7, I am forced to Use it on a couple of PC's and as far as I am concerned I find it a bit unreliable and the very few things it does better than XP are outweighed by what it does not !
I don't understand the "security card" often played ! an operating system should be just a low resource platform to run My chosen software , nothing is secure if it's hung on an open network.
It may be old now but XP will be around long after Win 7 ! I believe Globally about 10% of PC's are running Win 7 and 50-60% Win XP and being that average PC's have not got any faster in the last 3 Years people don't upgrade like they used to and Win 8 will be out next Year anyway.... let's hope it's not another polished Vista

That's a silly comparison. You're comparing an OS which has been out for less than six months - well under one hardware cycle - with one which is nearly 9 years old. XP has had an astonishing lifespan, but it's started a long, slow decline.

Whenever I see somebody stating that XP does things better than 7 without offering any logic to back it up, my first reaction is that they just don't like change.

You are of course fully entitled to your opinion... even if it's total codswallop :). It sounds more like a case of ignorance is bliss, or possibly you believe you know more than you do.

Just my opinion of course :).

I totally agree, tbh I think 7 will end up being the de-facto OS just like XP has.

Abomination! That's virtually signature worthy! Very true though, XP just makes me sad when I'm forced to use one of the older work stations at well... work.

W7 is the here and now, there's literally 0 sense in going back to XP.

Sorry, I really CBA to get into a "Mine does Your does" obviously some of Us use out systems very differently and 90% of people remember go no deeper than start-documents with the bonus that W7 has basic drivers for most hardware the W7 experience for them is perfect.

You should be a little careful ;) no good putting the message on a "sugar lump" :D
You have no idea of My background/abilities and likewise for Me ! although I am drawing a pretty good mental picture !.....touche'

I really have little interest in arguing about operating systems, I was just sticking My oar in because the poor Guy was not so much getting an answer to his question as a battering about his choice of os

Bint Box's questions were addressed in the very first reply of the thread by Burnsy, which is why I didn't feel the need to answer Bint Box's direct question. My post wasn't also simply advising Bint Box to stick with Windows 7 but to see what sort of problems he or she (sorry, I'm no entirely sure if you're a he or a she judging by your user-name. I'm swaying towards a she though. :p) was having with regards to some of the things he / she mentioned in the hope they were only minor problems that could quite easily be addressed in one way or another. :)
