I need a new matteress and tried out a Tempur Cloud 22 memory foam matteress in John Lewis. It costs £1500 but i've never laid on a matteress so comfortable in my life. I can't afford £1500 but in Argos i've seen another 'luxury' memory foam matteress by Posturewise. It's been reduced from £1100 to £900 and if I buy it with a bed base I get further 15% off the matteress price.

Both matteress are medium support so will there be much difference between the two? Has anyone tried the Posturewise or even own it?

Not sure I would want a whole mattress made of memory foam.

Why not just get a really good pocket- sprung mattress and put a thick memory foam topper on? I imagine that would be more comfortable and cheaper. (In fact it is, very comfy, as that is what I did :) )

I tried some beds with memory foam toppers and they were no where near as good as the memory foam one I tried.

What bed/top have you got?

Having tried for the best part of a year I am ditching my memory foam mattress. It has been giving me bad back problems and I have even been woken up with leg crap some nights. They are also really sweaty in the summer and I dread to think how much dead skin gets stuck in them.

They are just not worth it in my opinion. Going back to a hard airsprung mattress.

Our mem foam cost £500. Whilst its very comfortable, i find that the part of my body that touches the mattress gets really hot, whereas the 'open air' part gets cold, so i'm constantly shifting position.

I now have a decent quality pocket sprung bottom half with top half mem foam, and i love it. Costme about £350.

Don't be a snob, shop around. No way do you need to spend that much ona decent mattress.......of any make, unless you have orthopaedic issues.

I bought a memory foam mattress from that South American Rainforest for £200, slept on it a few times, and then it became permanently indented with my shape and stopped returning to normal. No I am not overweight. Yes I am stupid for buying such a ridiculously cheap mattress and expecting anything else.

When you first tried a memory foam matteress did it feel really comfortable for you but long term has proved not so good?

Have to agree with PapaLazaru above, we got rid of ours as it was apparent after a while that they offer little support whatsoever and serve only to try and boil you in your own sweat in the summer. I cant think of a worse material to make a mattress out of tbh although I respect others opinions who may differ from our own.

lots of people with foam complain about it getting hot

personally i didnt like the feel of it either

i ended up buyging a dual spring/foam combo matress which i love

Pocket sprung with 3" of latex on top = best of both worlds.

Cheaper than full memory foam, and doesn't make sexy time like doing it in quicksand.

Yes - massive difference.

I've yet to come accross a memory foam matress that comes anywhere close to Tempur.

Tempur are the leading brand, by a long way.

If you can't afford it now... save up and wait - you also get a 10yr warranty :)

I have a Tempur - hate travelling round hotels when they have normal sprung matresses... a few I've stayed in lately have had Tempur matresses though :D

That's not a Tempur then, those are common side effects of the knock-offs ;)

DO NOT compare the cheaper memory foam matresses to Tempur - they are in a completely different league... I've owned/lived with 3 different memory foam matresses & various others + travel through quite a lot of hotels - some good, some bad... there are some good sprung matresses out there, but for me... I haven't found anything that beats a Tempur.

Heck - there was a cheap ikea one an ex had, it permanently held the shape of the bed slats - it was horrible!

Basically, yes. I have no doubt that the really expensive ones may be better but it really has caused both me and my partner hassle. We both have experienced back pain using it so something is not right with how they work. Humans have for millions of years slept on hard surfaces and we are still designed to do so. I just don't think they work.

Getting rid of it next month and I am very much looking forwards to going back to a normal one.

They are two different mattress types so comparing them is difficult. One is a pure latex memory foam and the other is some sort of memory foam and foam/sprung combo.

The Posturewise mattress you mentioned (Memory Impression 200?) is made specially for Argos/Homebase as far as I am aware and I am unsure as to who actually makes these for them. A few things put me off it however.

One is that the description suggests turning the mattress reguarly as well as rotating the mattress, something which a mattress in that price bracket should not require. There is also no mention of the ammount of memory foam used or the number of pocket springs used. It simply states memory foam layer, no thickness and no details on the rest of the mattress components. Its all a bit vague. Also although it looks a good deal with £200 off I would be willing to bet that this is not a special deal and that it was priced exceptionally high when it was first introduced into their catalogue.

I would avoid like the plague.

With mattresses it all depends on what type of sleeper you are.

I am a particuarly hot sleeper and find that memory foam mattresses are too warm as they dont convect the heat away from my body when I sleep. Coupled with the fact that to stop the memory foam from degrading you need a waterproof under-sheet to stop sweat getting into the mattress then unles you are a particuarly cool sleeper then memory foam is not always the best choice.

Have had some people say they dont like the foam mattresses because they feel claustraphobic while sleeping as they sink into the mattress.

Personally I went with a Sealy Gold Posturepedic Pillowtop which has a sprung mattress with good support and a memoryfoam pillow top. It keeps me cool and comfortable and requires no turning or rotating. It cost me around £500 so did not break the bank but I find it more comfortable than any other mattress I have used.

I would stick to one of the better known brands and not just look for a bargain. Something from the Silent Night group perhaps so Sealy, Silent Night, Rest Assured or Layezee will be of a decent quality and not stupidly expensive. But it is more important to get the right type of mattress for the type of sleeper you are than to buy the right brand IMO. You could spend £1000's on a mattress but if it is not the correct type for you then it wont matter how much it cost.

It might not seem as comfy at first, but the harder the mattress generally the better it is on your back. I say this having had core / back problems for yonks.

My budget for a bed is £1000 max and thats including the bed base. I really can't afford to drop £1500 just for a matteress right now. I don't even really want to spend £1000 on a bed but if it was the same quality as the tempur I would. My budget for a bed base is £200 and £500-£600 for the matteress.

I can't remember the name of my Memory foam mattress but I paid £700 for it and its the best ever. I wouldn't go back to old style mattress now.

Also, the mattress I bought can not be turned, there are three different layers of foam so what Salsa said about the argos one may be true. Better memory foam mattresses may be made from different layers of foam (just a guess).

I was told by a sales person at John Lewis I should go for softer matteress as i'm quite tall (6ft) though I can't see how height determines what matteress you should use. I have some back problems right now though thats mainly because the matteress i'm currently using is well and truly past it.

I have a Silent Night one which I got for 75% off from Makro a while back and have no complaints about it at all with heat. It warms up quickly but a light summer 'breathing' duvet keeps you comfortable.

The best thing is when you're laying there you can feel the foam mouldling around you, feels good man.

I was so impressed that I bought a 100% memory foam pillow as well. I highly recommend them! The pillows are WAY more expensive than a good foam mattress deal though given how small they are in comparison!

They're also much easier to maintain and clean year round due to the zip up layers.
