Memory Foam Matteress

I was told by a sales person at John Lewis I should go for softer matteress as i'm quite tall (6ft) though I can't see how height determines what matteress you should use. I have some back problems right now though thats mainly because the matteress i'm currently using is well and truly past it.

That just sounds bizarre to me, the softer the matress the less support your back has, surely? I'm 6' 2" by the way.

Unless the soft matresses I've had have always been knackered.

I have a Silent Night one which I got for 75% off from Makro a while back and have no complaints about it at all with heat. It warms up quickly but a light summer 'breathing' duvet keeps you comfortable.

The best thing is when you're laying there you can feel the foam mouldling around you, feels good man.

I was so impressed that I bought a 100% memory foam pillow as well. I highly recommend them! The pillows are WAY more expensive than a good foam mattress deal though given how small they are in comparison!

Which Silent Night did you go for?

I got the 3 zone one, the 7 zone was not in stock but my parents have the 7 zone one and I thought it was a bit too deep while the 3 zone is a bit more firmer but still moulds well.

I'm no heavyweight or lanky luke though, 5ft8 and 9-10 stone :p

I have a pocket sprung mattress has about 1300 springs , & has a 50mm memory foam mattress overlay.

So comfortable,it is a a medium firmness, far better than a ordinary mattress.

My budget for a bed is £1000 max and thats including the bed base. I really can't afford to drop £1500 just for a matteress right now. I don't even really want to spend £1000 on a bed but if it was the same quality as the tempur I would. My budget for a bed base is £200 and £500-£600 for the matteress.

Don't buy memory foam then :)

FWIW - Dreams usually aren't too overpriced for them and offer interest free finance - I got my matress for £1200, spread over 12 months.

Have a look at ErgoFlex.

I slept on a Tempur for a week, was convinced but put off by the price and ended up buying an ErgoFlex - I have never regretted it. One caveat, they are both warmer than a normal mattress.

Incidentally, if you search for ErgoFlex or Tempur on here, you will find mentions of both.

Not as backwards as it sounds.

Dont get mixed up between firmess and support. A firmer mattress is not always the best choice, it is a bit of an old wives tale. If you have back problems and are a fairly tall chap then a supportive mattress is what you want not necessarily a firm one.

Do you sleep on your side or your back? If you sleep on your side then a firm mattress may not have enough give in it and will result in pressure on your shoulders and hip and cause your spine to flex in an un-natural way.

A medium mattress or medium/firm will allow your shoulder and hip to sink slightly into the mattress allowing your spine to lie straight would be much better for you.

The best mattress is usually, if you will excuse the term, a "goldilocks" mattress, which is not too hard and not too soft. Ultimately it is what works for you however dont be suckered by the harder is always better myth.

Something like a Silent Night Hampton Latex might be a good fit for you.

Yep my wife find it a little warm, we are going to put the ergo flex in 3 of the guest bedrooms and a Vi-spring in ours. My parents also have the Ergoflex and are very happy with it.

I just don't them the Tempur is worth 3 times as much as the ergo flex

I have a Somnus, it's not memory foam (I find them too hot) but i'll be dammed if I ever find a comfier bed.

If you can afford 'The Ambassador' you can sleep on 18,500 springs :D

Having tried for the best part of a year I am ditching my memory foam mattress. It has been giving me bad back problems and I have even been woken up with leg crap some nights. They are also really sweaty in the summer and I dread to think how much dead skin gets stuck in them.

They are just not worth it in my opinion. Going back to a hard airsprung mattress.

what he said ive gone back to a really good quality mattress from mistermatress mail order and ive not slept so good in ages

Just been out to try some beds and went to Benson for beds. Tried this Sealy one and it was like laying in heaven :-

Sealy Pillow Indulgence Double Size Mattress

He said they change the name of the beds in this shop I imagine to stop going back and googling for a cheaper price. I think this is the official one :-

http://www.sealy.co.uk/romance.html

I'm tempted to get it. Felt better than the Silentnights I tried. In the shop it says medium/firm but on the official Sealy website it says medium/gentle. The guy in the shop said to ignore firmness ratings and just go for the bed that feels right.

Are Sealy a good brand. Seems a bargain for £430 + an extra 20% discount.

EDIT:

Also saw this bedframe.

He said if I brought it with the matteress he'd do it for £300 and i'd get a 5 year guarentee with both. Good Deal?

I used to have a memory foam mattress, but found it got a bit hot.
I've now got a Vispring pocket-sprung bed & mattress which I much prefer.

DO NOT BUY TEMPUR! They're a con.

Try these guys Trawl the site to read all the information that retailers don't tell you..

They supplied me with a lovely Latex 1500 Pocket Spring mattress in King Size, I love it :D

What a laughable statement.

Tempur is the premium quality mattress manufacturer globally. Even in the US they had no real competition (own 50% of the luxury mattress market, and still have most of it anyway) until mid 2011 .

It's important to remember that no other foam-like mattress is anything like Tempur, not by a mile. I'm not trying to advertise the company but a lot of people have been buying cheaper immitations only to be unsatisfied.

If you can't afford it then go for a spring mattress, dont buy a cheaper foam-like one cause you'll get "conned". There are plenty of spring based mattresses that are almost as good as Tempur and much cheaper so it's a great compromise unless you can easily afford the luxury brand.

Tempur just recently (earlier this month) brought out a low price (around $1000) version of their US range to hit against competition so it may be worthing checking whether they've brought it in UK yet (probably not).

Known issues with foam mattresses are the increased heat where there is a lot of body contact, that becomes more of an issue if you use a divan instead of standard bed frames that allow the material to breath better. It's not that much of an issue though. The recent competitor to Tempur in US is cheaper and focuses on the "coolness" factor due to different material but I don't think it's available in UK yet.
