I'm currently looking at the server hardware for a new SBS 2008 R2 installation (about 15 users).

At the moment I can't decide whether to play-it-safe and have 16GB of memory, or to risk it and go with 12GB.

Anyone out there with hands-on-experience?

I beleive SBS came in R2 form to allow for 64 bit and Hyper-V.

To be honest we have 4gb happily running a 18 person exchange. THats not noting other boxes like support and accounts.

Thanks for the input.

The reference to R2 was just because I'm so used to typing it in relation to SBS 2003.

My home server is running SBS 2008 on 8GB and just about works acceptably. I initially tried it with 4GB and it was unusable.

I’m going to play it safe and spec the server for 16GB with room to easily add more.

After long time running with just 5 users, sbs 2008 consumes around 8-10gb ram, we typically put 16gb in servers we supply, keeps them ticking over without issue

A client has 8GB in their SBS 2008 server with about 5 or 6 users. It is a little slow at times, but this due to the age of the CPU and general crappiness of the hardware.

My SBS 2008 server at home has 6GB and runs brilliantly the vast majority of the time, though Exchange isn't particularly taxed [half my family insists on using their webmail ]

If you can afford it, go for 16GB as suggested. You should never have to worry about memory then. :)

4gb runs sluggish, and slow to reboot, although it does work.
8GB is good enough for small networks 15 users and runs pretty decently.
After that it really depends on what the loads are and how much you want to spend...
