Ok, little bit of help required from you knowlegable chaps before I ring support on Monday/ Tuesday.

Bit of background. Bought a pre-overclocked bundle from here back in October as part of a new build. Due to work and other commitments I never really got the opportunity to test it/ put it through its paces until the xmas/ new year period. But I had noticed the occasional BSOD crash. Anyways, during the xmas period I got chance to play a few games and the system appeared unstable, crashing randomly (BSOD) even sometimes whilst merely browsing a web page - not the most memory intensive. I ran a test using Evererst, but this would come up "hardware failure" after only a few seconds. My 1st thought was that 1 of the sticks of memory was causing problems, so I downloaded Memtest86 and booted from that. Testing all 6GB caused it to freeze 4 seconds into the 1st test. I then went into the bios and loaded the default values to see if it was merely the overclocked settings causing the failure, but again the test froze after 5 seconds this time.

I then removed each stick of ram and tested individually - all passed with no errors for 5 passes. However, as soon as I add a 2nd stick and run the test it restarts a few seconds into the test. With all 3 sticks in, it doesnt restart, but merely freezes.

My only conclusion to this is that the memory controller on the board is faulty, or something along those lines. Does that sound like a correct assumption?

The motherboard is a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 and the oveclocked bundle was the following at 4Ghz, but like I say has been tested at the default settings also:

Any tips, assistance much appreciated. Have resigned myself in having to take apart the system for a return, but just wondering if anything else I can try in mean time?

I have a similar problem.
My system (i7 920 C0/Gigabyte EX58-UD5) was Lynx and Prime95 stable at an OC of 3.4GHz. But it failed Intel Burn In Test almost immediately, even on stock settings. But since there were no other issues I wasn't bothered about it.
Then in November (after 7 months of no issues) I started getting BSOD about once a week so I tested each ram stick individually and no problems were found. Putting all 3 of them in and it would fail Lynx or Prime95 within seconds on stock settings, even superPI failed.
I just put it back to 3.4GHz because I was getting a strange whiny noise from the mobo when scrolling in a webpage or opening a window, for example (while on stock settings )and lived with the issue as I didn't want to RMA my mobo and be stuck without a pc for god knows how long. Then after a few weeks the problem went away. I am still Lynx and Prime95 unstable on stock as on my OC, not to mention IBT, but I stopped getting BSODs or any crash/freezes.
I really want to OC it further than 3.4GHz but its pretty annoying since I cant really stress test it.
Anyways, it seems there is something wrong with some of these mobos and your assumption appears to be correct.
