Memory or Motherboard problem!

Hi all,

I have a fairly old computer, 3 years old, and have been thinking about upgrading my 1 gb of ram. Last night I took out one of the two sticks to get the details (I've done this a few times before). I'm not the best with computers...I then put the piece back in, but upside down, realised it didn't work so took it out. I cleaned it by rubbing and blowing on the gold bits and put it back in. Still didn't work so I took it out and tried with one bit of ram in the slot, it worked! Seeing as it worked I took it out to check which way they go in. Then I put them both sticks in but sadly it didn't work. Then I took them both out, cleaned and put back them back but to no avail. I've tried putting in several times but my machine is still not working.

The machine is making a beeping noise. Have I damaged the RAM or Motherboard?

Thanks,
Jon

I'd suggest you've damaged the RAM as the motherboard is doing what it's supposed to do in this case and beeping at you to tell you the RAM is knackered.

I don't know why people seem to insist on blowing at computer components. The moisture from your mouth can damage the components. Looks like you've killed it mate. I too ask how you could possibly stick it in upside down? Back to front is understandable, but upside down?

are you sure the memory is in the slots properly?, push them in untill they clip in on both sides. one side at a time. I did this with my first upgrade, I was too scared to push any harder incase I broke something.
