On the sensible and logical side, I agree with you that in real world gaming my 290x with poor memory clock probably ain't gonna be much worse in actual performance than those that can clock to 6000MHz+, but on the psychological side, I am feeling really bad to get a card that is such a poor clocker on the memory that's below average, considering it was a big upgrade for me, and I wanted it to be perfect (not expecting top clocker, but would want at least to be up to average standard)That 3.9% will be even lower at 1080P though and this is by far the biggest increase ive seen so far. The next highest was 2%. You just don't need to overclock the memory on 512 bit bus in most (but not all) situations. I will test Sleeping Dogs at some point. That used to net me 10% extra performance on a 384bit bus with my 7970 going from 1375mhz-1875mhz.

I mean I would usually considering myself a logical person, and I know the figures on the on the performance difference is not big, but the psychological side of things is doing my head in (and Gibbo continuously quoting 6600MHz+ clock certainly doesn't help lol). I mean 5500MHz comparing to average 6200 to high range 6600-6800MHz is kinda hard to swallow.
