HI there

Well as you know I commented on how memory prices were increasing quite quickly a couple of weeks ago, and well still prices are on the up.

A perfect example was the GeIL 2GB PC2-6400C4 kits we were selling approx three weeks ago for £130 Inc. VAT.
These same kits are now at £180 Inc. VAT and may hit close to £200 in the next coming weeks.

At the moment a great deal is also the Corsair PC2-6400 parts on This Week Only offer, OcUK is fortunate enough to have a good memory purchaser as we have 1000+ modules in stock at old pricing but as of tomorrow the special deal ends and we shall follow market trend and increase our prices to a little under what competitors are. So buying today on these is a very good idea as you could save yourself £30-£40.

These price increases are set to continue throughout September, things may level out in October but at the moment no signs or anything to believe they may drop in price. Hopefully memory may begin dropping again in October but its possible these high prices may now remain throughout this year and prices won't drop back down until February/March next year as demand is still very good.

Regarding DDR well if your thinking of an upgrade then do it because Corsair are reducing their DDR range by over 75% and increasing prices and most other memory manufacturers are doing the same. So DDR will have less production and as such it will cost more to produce nd the price premium will be huge.

I guess I was lucky to buy the Geil RAM when it was at a cheap price!

BTW, out of interest, does the price increase affect OcUK branded RAM?

It effects all memory, accept for flash products.

This also means graphics cards could start increasing as well because they obviously need to purchase memory and normally re-knew their contracted pricing every 3 months.

what is the reason for this HUGE increase in price....

cheers :)

I'd like to know this too - I can't see why it should go up as much as it has, as A) It certainly shouldn't be any more expensive to manufacture, and B) demand will naturally drop as prices are getting silly for 2GB again, and I'm certainly not getting any richer. At current prices I'm just not going to bother updating as I'm on a budget, so if things get higher, I'll simply forget about upgrading this year.

Well AMD have completely switched over to DDR2, thus pushing demand up. And now that Dell are about to start selling AMD systems they'll be buying up huge quanties of it for both their Intel and AMD systems.

I'm really relieved that I bought the Geil when it was going cheap cheap cheap.

Some say the memory makers are just a big cartel, who knows could be some truth to that.

In honesty I love memory its one of the best products to sell, at times like this margins are very high, its has close to ZERO return rate, takes up little storage space and always sells easily. :)

Thing is the memory manufacturers can charge whatever they wish, because no matter what we all need memory and as such everybody will pay. There was a few issues a few weeks back with a lot of memory getting crushed and hence not enough supply to cope with demand. Then no doubt prices go up to re-coup some of that loss.

Whilst there is demand prices can keep going up when demand levels off and the ICs all of a sudden have more than enough stock pricing will level and then begin to fall. Though at the moment demand is incredibly high and as such pricing will keep increasing.

OcUK is in a good position because I stocked all our shelves high before the price increases, but I have to use business sense and follow market trend. Why should I sell 5000 memory stick at £100, when I can sell them at £150 over the same period of time, make sense? OcUK will just aim to be competitive during this time and cannot recommend a good time to buy. Some could say now is a good time as prices are still going up. However if one choose to wait 4-8 weeks then prices may drop, but they may not, the price could stay high until next year. No one really knows, all I can see if prices still going up...........

It sadly does, been looking at Macbook memory modules and Crucial have increased the price of the 1Gb sticks by about £15-20 since about 2 weeks ago.

Corsair same stick - gone up £20 since 2 weeks ago

Transcend 1Gb module - £92 as apposed to £70, 2 weeks ago

Thankyou for your in-depth reply, I can understand why you would want to maximise the profits if demand is still there too :), in fact I'm more annoyed with myself with trying to wait for things to go cheaper when they already were at a decent price.

I'm considering rolling the dice and ordering possibly on friday - would it be likely that the GeIL and G.Skill 2GB DDR2 packs will still be around £140.99 Inc VAT? (G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit & GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit). If so, I may take the plunge.

Also, as a slightly off-topic question, would you know whether each of those are compatible with the MSI K9N Neo 550 board?

If I were to order on friday with one of the cheaper delivery options (assuming there are options), would it arrive after monday? (I won't be around to collect it on monday, so looking at ideally tuesday or later)?

And final question: do I need to set up any kind of account with OCUK before I buy?

Thanks :)

Balls. Balls. Balls. Loads of balls.

Buying in 4 weeks

How regulary do you buy stock? As if you haven't bought anything for 2/3/4 weeks then price rises for production today does not affect the products. All thats happening there is people taking advantage of the situation. :/

When will prices start to fall again? £300 or more for mem is just maddness

As for my purchase I cant go above £600, so I may just have to hit the hole thing on the head as I dont want to buy now as the prodicts in a month time might not work with it and then im stuffed

Edit: Ooh im only £30 over atm.

Gibbo, if I buy the PC6400 800mhz Geil that you said is good now and then buy the rest in 4 weeks time, if it doesn't work would I get a full refund?

If I won't then I can't risk buying :(

Im glad I got in there with the geil GeIL 2GB 6400 when I did last week. Thats a big jump in price!

I find it quite funny that memory for my new rig has cost me a good 40% more than im gonna pay for my CPU, which has only been rolling out of production for a month!

These manufacturers are making a lot of money.. Can't believe this is still going on really, its def deliberate and planned out. It will prob go up much higher than it is at the mo.. I smell a snowball effect of everyone panicing about the prices and shortage. *Looks at this threads title ;)*

I normally buy stock regular, but stocked up weeks ago on memory so we've not bought in memory from major people like Corsair or GeIL for 3 weeks now and still have approx 4-6 weeks supply. Our prices increase because we keep with market trend and as such we can remain competitive whilst making very high margin levels. Its how the memory game works and if you purchase well its how millions are made. :)

Some are saying the prices won't fall now until next year and its now hitting graphics cards too, especially ones equipped with DDR2 memory.......

The GeIL has lifetime warranty and as market value is increasing on memory if you send it back in 4-8 weeks time you'd still get a full refund or it exchanged for a working set. The chances of this is unlikely as memory has minimal failure rate.

Thanks for the headsup Gibbo. At this rate, I might have to buy my memory off the MM :p

Just found this on my Opera homepage:

September 05, 2006 (IDG News Service) -- Some of Taiwan's Dynamic RAM makers have reported record monthly sales for August, highlighting an increase in DRAM prices that could continue in the months ahead.
The higher prices are unlikely to affect PC prices thanks to the stiff competition among system vendors and makers of other types of components, such as microprocessors. But users who want some extra DRAM for their PCs could find themselves handing over a bit more money than before.
