memory problems?

Hi,

I've just bought and set up the following:

Intel E5200
Abit IP35 Pro XE (BIOS is as shipped, not sure of version)
OCZ 2x2Gb Gold PC2-6400 (OCZ2G8002G)
ATI 4870 1Gb

powering it is a Hyper 580w power supply.

BIOS is set to auto for CPU and volages; the RAM is set by SPD.

Out of the box it POST'd; I've installed XP and Vista 64bit and then ran PCMark05 and 3DMark06 in XP and PCMark and 3DMark Vantage in Vista with no problems at all. I noticed that CPU-Z was showing the memory timings at 6-6-6-18 so I thought I'd try to tighten them to 5-5-5-18 (advertised on OC) initially and then try 5-5-5-15 (seen somewhere else) though I'm not too bothered about that as I was under the impression that tight timings aren't that important for Core 2 CPU's.

I booted the PC with the standard settings into Memtest 3.5 and within say 10 to 15 secs my PC just resets.

I thought that maybe I needed to run them @ 2.1v so bumped that up and did Memtest again with the same result.

I put the DDR2 voltage back to auto and then took one DIMM out of slot 3 so only slot 1 was used. Memtest ran OK until I shut down after a couple of mins (I thought that was ok as it didn't reset straight away). I then took that DIMM out and put the other one back in slot 1 and again it was ok.

I repeated the same tests with the DIMMS in slot 3 and again seemed ok. I put both DIMMS back in slot 2 and 4 and the reset problem happened again!! :(

Any ideas?

Cheers :)

some mobos are fussy on where you put your ram the way the board is programmed to address memory etc nothing to worry about if you put another 2gb in it will still work fine

cheers for the reply, so you're saying that the mobo and RAM combo when in dual channel 4Gb will not be memtest stable but will be ok if I put another 2Gb DIMM in to bring it up to 6Gb it will be?

When I'm home after work I'll put the two sticks in slot 1 and 2 so they're both in but running in single channel to see if that works.

possible success

ok I flashed my BIOS to the latest version, 11, and still had no joy so as another test in dual channel mode (slot 2&4) I decided to run the older version of memtest on the CD, 3.4.

3.4 ran fine for around 15 mins!!!! :D

as another test I ran the experimental 3.5 SMP and again that seemed to run fine. :)

I then adjusted the timings to 5-5-5-15 with the voltage still as auto and again 3.5 SMP ran fine :D

I'm hoping this is just an issue with the standard Memtest 3.5 and my setup :confused::confused:

definatly think it's an issue with the memtest version. Tried memtest86+ 2.11 and it ran ok @ 5-5-5-15 over night on auto voltages. happy now :D
