Hello

6 months ago I bought 6gb of ram from Overclockers as below:

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel
(OCZ3G1600LV6GK)

As I have 6gb of ram, I want another 6gb which equals 12gb, now I know you need the ram to be the same so I went on overclockers and saw this:

Sorry, this product is currently not available !

I need advice on an alternative, what to buy as it has to be compatiple with my i7 920 on
x58 mobo and oviously the ram I already have.

I was thinking having 2 brands of ram will cause problems ?

Im looking at these but not sure, as cheaper the better:

But before I order I need to be 100% certian they will work with my PC

All advice appreciated, saves me calling tech support !

Also if anyone has any overclockers discount codes or know where to grab them from please give me a shout !

cheers

Hi there,

Is your i7 920 overclocked?

You can still buy that OCZ RAM, but unfortunately not from OCUK (give the kit serial number a google). Going for this kit is your best bet if you want to match the kits. However, going for the kit you linked to will most likely work OK (I would play it safe and make sure you run both kits at 1.6V, since the Geil kit doesn't seem to be rated for 1.65V), and it is the cheapest option if you want to get to 12GB.

That said, running 6 modules does put a lot of strain on the memory controller (which is on the CPU), this will make overclocking more tricky and most likely reduce the stable frequency the memory will run at. Instead, I would suggest investing in this kit and selling on your existing kit.

OCZ are no longer in the RAM business. Any you for sale is the remains of their stock.

Your original RAM is 1600MHz, 8-8-8-24 at 1.65V.

The RAM you linked to is 1600MHz, 8-8-8-28 at 1.5-1.6V.

They'll likely work together but you'll have to set the voltages and timings manually to get settings that both will work at.

For example both sets might be happy at 1600MHz, 8-8-8-28 at 1.6V.

If your system is overclocked then you'll very likely have to look at that again.

An overclock that works with 3 sticks of RAM may not work with 6 due to the extra strain on the memory controller.

You may not be able to overclock as highly as you did previously.

And this is a bit cheeky in a forum paid for by OcUK:

ok what ram do you recomend then ? which ram shall I buy that would work with my ram I have at the moment ?

Also with regards to overclocking, i dont know how that stuff works and I dont have the expertise to do it,

All I need is 6 extra gb of ram that is 100% compatible with the ram I have at the mo, whatIm worried about is mixing the brands and then it wont work or my pc might crash,

can you recomend ?

If you want 100% guaranteed compatability then you need to buy the exact same RAM as you already have.

It's available if you search for it but it's a fair bit more expensive than the GeIL RAM you linked to.

Your options:

1) Buy the GeIL RAM you linked to and there's a 90% chance it will work with what you already have if you get the settings right.

2) Buy another 6GB exactly the same as you already have.

3) Buy the 12GB kit cmndr_andi linked to and sell your existing RAM.

If you go with option 1 then we'll help all we can to get things working for you. If the worst comes to the worst you can always send the RAM back under DSR for a refund (as long as you buy it mail order).

May I ask why you want/need 12GB? 6GB is plenty for 95% of users.

My pc is not overclocked, just dont know how to go about it, its to confusing for me..

very good advice, on selling my existing kit and buying a new set ! but I thought it would be cheaper if I just bought another 6gb of compatile ram, not to keen on ebaying as I bought my 6gb ram for £100, I dont think I,ll get more than £40 minus the listing and selling fee's

I mean I should be able to get somthing for around £50 ?

Like I said you can get the GeIL RAM and we'll try and help if you have problems and you can send it back for a refund under DSR if need be.

Any particular reason you want 12GB?

Yes, 12gb ram will give me more breathing space for my PC, Ive been using a lot of programmes latley so it will speed up my processes, also mostly for gaming, it,ll be faster, and shutting down and restarting will be quicker too ..

Well I'm off to bed now.

Remember that if you want the GeIL RAM at that price you need to buy it before the new offers come out in a few hours time.

Consider what I posted above.

Unless you use some more obscure and/or highly resource intensive software, you will not see a difference. Games will certainly show no discernible difference. Again, start up and shut down will be no faster. Save your money.
