Have received (and posted back the previous memory for testing) the new Black Dragon memory by Geil today and I could use a little help with setting it up in bios, folks - I hope someone can help me.

I've been told by the OCUK tech guys to use one stick in slot 3 for now, set it up in bios and then put in the other one (I guess when I know it's working). There's a sticker on the side of the memory saying the following:

DDR2-1066 CL=5-5-5-15 / Voltage: 2.4v

I can see in the bios an area called "Extreme Tweaker", so I'm hoping that's the right area to input the settings I need. But do I need to change any main menu settings in there before I can change the memory settings (some selections are greyed out) , and if not which bit do I need to select to change?

Here's what I see in that screen:

Extreme Tweaker
-----------------
AI tuning Auto
X Overclock Options Disabled
X N.O.S. Option Disabled
X System Clocks Disabled
X FSB & Memory Config Disabled

> Overclocking
> Over Voltage
SLI Broadcast Aperture Disabled
Nvidia GPU Ex Disabled
Linkboost Enabled
X SLI-Ready Memory Not Detected

If I enable the AI Tuning option I can access the FSB & Memory area - I'm guessing this is the area I would need. Inside that selection - when I go to it - I see the following:

Memory Timing
---------------
tCL (CAS Latency) Auto
tRCD Auto
tRP Auto
tRAS Auto
Command Per Clock (CMD) Auto

Advanced Memory Settings
--------------------------
tRRD Auto
tRC Auto
tWR Auto
tWTR Auto
tREF Auto
tRD Auto
tRFC Auto
Async Latency Auto

Can somebody PLEASE tell me what area I need to be in and what actually things/selections I need to change so I can the readings listed on the memory sticker? I'm hoping someone can do this tonight as I'm pretty wired and ready to get this done - PLEASE HELP!

Hope I'm answering the right question here. Try this (numbers donate a particular starting point):

1 Extreme Tweaker

1 > AI Tuning: Manual
1 > 2 FSB & Memory Config
2 > FSB - Memory Clock Mode: Linked
2 > FSB - Memory Ratio: Sync Mode*
1 > 3 Overclocking
3 > Memory Timing Setting**

* If you want to run at a ratio of 1:1 use Sync Mode, not 1:1
** Then set whatever your memory runs at

Hope this helps.

I think it does, yeah :) Just to clear a couple of things up though first - hope you don't mind...

1) where you say ** Then set whatever your memory runs at - I guess that's the 5-5-5-15 bit, right? Do those digits have anything to do with the things like tCL/tRCD or tWR/tWTR areas where it says auto? I mean when I input the memory settings is that these items I'm changing (hope that makes sense)?

2) where you say * If you want to run at a ratio of 1:1 use Sync Mode, not 1:1 - what is the ratio thing for? And should I be concerned with it?

I hope these questions make sense - I just want to make sure I get this right.

Ooh - where do set the voltage?!

1. Correct, in that order.

2. It depends on how good your memory is really. Most sets can do up to 800Mhz which is 400FSB x (your CPUs multiplier, e.g. E6300 = 7 x 400 = 2.8GHz).

Voltage should be under the Extreme Tweaker section, I restarted my machine to have a quick look at the BIOS before but it will say Over-voltage or something like that.

So under the memory timing settings I don't change the Command Per Clock (CMD) bit - I leave that bit as it is?

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-067-GL - this is the memory I purchased. I did take a quick peak at that bios area and (without saving it all - was just checking it out) I did put the sync mode thing in and noticed that the memory went down to something like 667mhz - the memory listed says (on that link) says it's 1066mhz - did I do something wrong there?

Just noticed under the reviews for this memory someone noted the following:

"Just got some of this from OCUK. No trouble getting it to hit higher speeds than the default 1066. At 2.4V getting 1160Mhz." - is that due the memor multiplier - or something like that - being altered?

I don't want to push this memory too far, but seing that reading of 667mhz - knowing that the link says it can be 1066mhz - and then the reviewers suggestion that they had theirs running at 1160mhz...gad - it's all confusing!

Oof, nice memory :D

Set the CMD to 2 for now.

Where you see the QDR that's how you set an overclock. If you set it to 1066 you will be running at stock settings, it's a bit confusing. Then try setting it to 1200 and check your clock speeds, should go up hopefully. It might be best you read some guides to prepare youself, I just had a play, just don't overvolt anything too much.

So, here's what i guess I do:

Memory Timing
---------------
tCL (CAS Latency) from auto to 5
tRCD from auto to 5
tRP from auto to 5
tRAS from auto 10 15
Command Per Clock (CMD) from auto to 2

QDR? Must be tired as I don't remember that bit :) But would that be where I saw the ratio bit? Just curious so I know what to set to get it reading as 1066mhz.

Yeah the QDR will be with the ratios, your BIOS may be different but it should be along those lines.

So I just set that so it reads 1066mhz? Is that ok to do?

Hmm...I hope 2.4 volts is ok to put it to...hope it doesn't freeze things up...

hey matt1 in your BIOS do you have the RAM set to Linked or Unlinked and what QDR do you have to get 3ghz on your cpu?

Matt - I tried putting in the 5-5-5-15 settings, save and exited - it then froze on reboot (the bottom of the screen had the press TAB or DELETE message - neither worked). I reset the cmos, rebooted and went into the bios again - did the same thing, and changed the voltage to 2.1 (was told to do that by the tech guys today) - exactly the same result. Reset again, tried putting the dvd drive on as the 1st boot device - saved and exited - same again. Wtf is going on here?! I am seriously bugged by this now - I've spent a heck of a lot of money on a system that I cannot use - I've no idea what else to do now.

Spoke to the tech guys again - after a lengthy chat and some more attempts they suggested that I update the bios for the mobo incase that was a problem that might cause the system to act up. I did that but still it acted the same. The the guy made a comment that sounded totally plausible so I thought I'd see what you folks made of it.

My cpu (the dual core 6850) apparently is a 1333fsb model - it was likely that the mobo's bios isn't capable of taking this cpu yet (he said it wasn't an uncommon problem with new processors), so even though the bios was updated it wasn't as upto date as it needed to be. I was told to keep checking the asus website for further striker extreme updates as they'd probably be posting something soon that would deal with this problem. So, after his suggestion I ordered the E6600 (1066FSB) cpu instead, and I was told that this one should work with my now updated bios.

My question is this: is it believable that my 1333FSB cpu could be causing a problem with my setup due to something like the mobo not yet having a bios update for these new cpu's? And could is it probable that the ordered 1066FSB cpu could solve my problems until a bios update becomes available for the 1333FSB cpu?
