Memory speeds

Why does some memory need to be so fast? EG unless your FSB can run over 500 what's the point in memory that is faster than this? (DDR of course) I'm aware you can run it at different dividers, but does this give an advantage? Aren't you held back by the slowest link in the chain, ie your FSB speed?
 
Obviously it'll allow for greater bandwidth if you were to drop the multi. But I don't know if there becomes a point where after a certain speed you can have "too much" bandwidth? Who knows... I guess sometimes people just see the higher number and get it to willy wave. lol.
