Memory started failing... Help...

Ordered and been using CellShock 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-8000C4 1000MHz Dual Channel Kit for about 10 months now. It was RMA'ed once (frequent crashes and failing memtest86) back in April.

Since it's return in May, it's been rock solid stable at 1000MHz at all rated specs. Never tried pushing it higher.

As of today, my system (usually on 24/7) has crashed 8 times and now on a memtest, the memory is regularly failing at a specific (948Mb) location.

Time for another RMA? Or anything else I should check. Nothing has changed on the system for 6 months, no new hardware, no bios changes, no bios updates. It's exactly as it has been.

As you say memtest shows the modules failing. Personally i would RMA both modules. I would also reconsider asking the retailer to change them for an alternative manufacturer as you have had two sets that are faulty.

Telephoned the retailer to RMA, they have said send them back for replacement. I asked if it would be possible to buy some more RAM now and then have it reimbursed when these are tested and found faulty by the retailer, but they flat out refused.

Basically I am trying to avoid being without my PC for ANOTHER 3-4 weeks while the retailer faffs around and gets my memory returned.

Also I can't change brands etc and won't get equivalent monetary value if the RAM is substitued. I get "their choice" that will be of "similar" specifications....

hmm looks like those D9GKX chips are as short lived as the GMH :(

I picked up a 2gig set of OCZ Reaper while waiting for my g.skills RMA - just put them in 5 minutes ago and running memtest...

The OCZ reaper are outstanding modules nice overclockers from the reviews i have read.

Are they 8500 or 6400 modules?

Nice to hear your back up and running

6400 (with promos ICs :S but if they do 1000MHz stable I'll be more than happy - I'm even tempted to run at stock heh) they've passed a few runs of memtest so looks like the stick are good at stock - but they are slightly behind my old g.skills in benchmarks.

EDIT: My verdict on the OCZ Reaper (6400) - they are crap for overclocking, they won't do 1000MHz stable on any sensible voltage without really really loose timings... for running at stock they do nicely enough but are a little behind my old g.skills HZ kit at stock in every way.

5-5-5-15 at 1000 is average at best (my g.skills did 4-4-4-12 @ 1000 w/ 2.3v and 4-4-4-15 @ 1000 with 2.2v) they are rated for 4-3-3-15 on EPP motherboards and 4-4-4-15 on non-EPP but they won't do 4-3-3- anything on my P35 heh.

Sorry to hi-jack the OPs topic :S

But now they are giving me errors in memtest on stock and I've only had them an hour - and all I've done aside from memtest them on stock settings is try 1000MHz on their highest rated voltage... not a great start.

are these reaper modules from the same retailer?

not a great start as you say. I understand how you feel, had the same problem sometime back..

Another RMA i guess

What a heap of junk these turned out to be :( soon as they warmed up they topped themselves... at no time did I run them outside of their specification (well except upping the MHZ to 1000 but that shouldn't kill them).

These were bought from OCuk same as my g.skills (but thats not a reflection on OCuk I've had tons of RAM from them that works fine)

Bad luck dude.

Atleast you should get a straight swap instead of waiting for a lengthy RMA.

I've got value RAM as a backup so my system won't be down :)

One stick seems to be fine, but the other one goes to (4 letter word) as soon as it gets warm - the one stick seems to do 1000MHz fine but the other not a chance...

OCuk are showing the RAM as out of stock now so not sure if a straight swap is possible :S

ick both sticks seem to be working fine at the same frequency and voltage as my value RAM so I'll just run them all in together if it works and give myself some extra RAM while I get the g.skills RMA'd :S cba with the hassle of returning them over £50...

Looks like I'm gonna have to RMA them :( the bad stick is playing up even at 5-5-5-15 667MHz now - which is slacker than the value RAM normally runs at... I wouldn't have bothered if it was stable at the same timings as the value RAM.
