Memory timings

I'm quite unfamiliar with memory timings. Currently on my IP35 I have not changed anything to do with memory timings. They should all be on default as I can't even find where they are in the bios.

I can see from CPU-Z my Corsair (4gb) PC2-6400 is at 5-5-5-18......

Is there anything to gain from changing them and does anyone know where they are on the IP35 bios?

The core 2 duo's don't respond as well as older cpu's to tighter timings. It's the speed (MHz) that affects them more.

I know the ASUS boards don't show the timings if set to default so I assume the Abit boards are probably the same.

Although this is a C2Q. Is 5-5-5-18 acceptable then? I don't know the boundaries of my RAM. Didn't have much luck finding the timings PC2-6400 CAS4 would do

It depends what type of Corsair RAM it is.

If it is the XMS Edition then there are 2 flavours. C4 & C5 which would give you 4-4-4-12 or 5-5-5-15.

The default settings are not far off tbh although you would be able to set them at 5-5-5-15 instead of 5-5-5-18.

There will be very little performance increase but nothing you would actually see.

You could probably drop the timings to 4-4-4-12 with no voltage increase and they should be stable, however, test the timings with memtest to see if they are stable.

I'm not sure where in the bios the settings would be to alter the timings but it will be there somewhere.

As dazz25 says, there will be a far more performance boost if you increase the speed of the ram instead of the timings.

Increase the mhz little by little and test to see if they are stable. If not them up the voltage of them. Do not go any higher than 2.2v though as that really stresses the ram and you could fry them. Under 2.2v and your fine as Corsair holds the warranty on their ram at 2.2v and lower.

I have the XMS C4 stable at 1000mhz with 5-5-5-15 timings and they fly.

Ah I see, Its described as PC2-6400 CAS 4. I may try and change it to 5-5-5-15 if I have the time but if 5-5-5-18 is fine then I may simply leave it like that as you say. 800MHZ RAM seems to be running like a beast anyway.

At q6600 @ 3GHZ the pc seems to load before windows slightly slower than it would normally load up for some reason. But once have logged into windows its fine. Bit unusual, possibly something to do with q6600 overclock as opposed to RAM since havent changed that

If your RAM is the CAS4 then it is made to run at 4-4-4-12 stock anyway so drop the timings.

Motherboards sometimes do not set the correct timings when at default. I have the same memory and my P5N-E SLI set the timings to 5-5-5-15 on default.

You will not need to up the voltage.
