memory upgrade

I am about go through the process of upgrading, bit by bit, now memory is probably what I know least about, so my question is, and I am making an assumption here cos I am at work and can't 100% remember what I have but I think its pc2-8500. Now if I upgrade my memory to some of the newer DDR3, whether dual or tri channel, would it still work, obviously at reduced speed, on my current board which is an Asus P5W DH deluxe, until I get the funds for the mobo upgrade, or would I be better off sticking the new memory in a draw until I get the new board? Last thing I wanna do is buy a memory upgrade and kill it by running it in my current setup.
Cheers.

Sorry, that motherboard supports DDR2 only.

DDR3 won't fit and won't work.

As above. I'd recommend saving up for a new motherboard/processor then get some DDR3 RAM.

It will be compatible that way plus will proberbly have come down in price(not that RAM is expensive right now)
