I have a need to upgrade the memory in my system to the maximum possible for a given cost, for data analysis and simulation purposes .
I have this system, with some minor upgrades, summary specification below :
Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail
Asus P9X79 PRO Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
GSkill Ripjaws Z Series 1600 CL 9.0 16GB Memory Kit - Red (4x 4GB, DDR3, Quad Channel, Intel XMP Certified)
OcUK GeForce GTX 970 "NVIDIA 970 Cooler Edition" 4096MB
OCZ ZS Series 750W PSU
I am interested in possibly 8x8Gb but am not clear what limitations my system would face.
a) Can my system support 64Gb of RAM? - probably, yes
b) Is DDR3 my only optionor can I consider DDR4? - DDR3 is ony option, cannot use DDR4
c) Is the "budget" option of an additional 32Gb (4x8Gb) compatible with the G-Skill RAM I have currently?
