Im trying to test some system ram in a computer.

I burnt the iso to disk, poped it in to the pc, and memtest loaded on its own and stated testing....

Is this all I have to do?

It didnt offer me any options to specify anything.... did about 18% in a matter of minuites?

I thought things like memtest could take hours?

Feels like I havent done it properly.

Yes, that's fine let it run for a few passes - this will take a few hrs.

It takes approx 25 mins for 1 complete pass.

It occured to me that the pc im testing has 8Gb of ram, and the memtest version im using says x86.......

Does that mean it may not test all the ram?

So far in 2hours its doen 1 pass no errors.

How many passes you think is sufficient to test?

When i'm setting up a new rig/installed new memroy i usually leave it running over night (But only after i've let it run for an hour to see if it gives out any errors early.)

But, 4 - 6hrs would be a good enough run for new sticks installed into an already up and running rig.

Mr Plec, on a totally unrelated note, i see you have a 2500k paired with your 460.

Im thinking of upgrading my qx9650 to a SB or a BD.

In your experience, has the 2500k lifted the performance of your 460?

Hey, Mr opethdisciple :)

Yes, but i don't think my answer will be of much help as the 460 was sat in a E5200 setup.

Admittedly, the E5200 was clocked @ 3.8GHz - but it would have still limited the 460 with some games - notibly the few quad core games (Dragon Age Origins, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander 2 - i noticed big improvements). I did notice speed improvement in other games i.e. smoother overall gameplay - but this could have been down to the raw processing power of the SB rather than the 460 being fully unleashed.

Where as you still have mighty spec - and the qx9650 wont be limiting the 460 in any way. So i think you will only notice slight improvements in quad core games - such as those already mentioned.

If you want a definitive answer try a post on the gfx card forum as there are guys in there obsessed with getting a few more FPS. One of them will probably know the likely FPS benefit from an upgrade such as yours - but i expect it will be limited.

EDIT: Here's a link comparing the QX6950 to the 2500K - link. Scroll down until you get to the game comparisons - it gives a small indication of the speed difference between the 2 chips. As you can see your QX6950 already has very respectable frame rates.
