Looking for your opinions on this if you have used it in your company or business or school environment.

What problems have you had with it, how have you found support to be etc.

Used it for several years and at first was very very happy with it. However right now its got a lot of problems and i wouldnt advise it to anybody.

- Updates are constantly rolled out with a lot of problems/bugs/feature changes.

- Pricing system is all over the place, i.e. you pay for some of the antispam features yearly, even though there static filters like SPF/DomainKeys, i can understand it when there is work being carried out on the system to constantly update the spam features like a baysian database, but not static filters, which should be implemented once.

- The Webmail system is incredibly slow, even on a 3.2ghz Xeon with 2GB ram and a 15,000 harddrive for the mail folders, it can still take 5-10 seconds to open up a mail folder if it containes more than 100+ emails. IMAP/POP however works in seconds.

- They keep releasing new features instead of bug fixing critical updates. They are trying to integrate webserver/ftp/sip etc etc, whilst there core product is falling to pieces and getting more expensive year on year. Nobody uses these features either (not just us, but almost nobody), lets face it, if you have windows you will use IIS/Apache, if you have linux, you will use apache for webserving, you wont fall back on a half-assed, buggy integrated solution. Same for SIP/VOIP and FTP.

- Most of the meark community are just as disappointed as iam, and are using a version which is probably 6-8 months old and having to deal with the potential security issues involved with that, simply because an upgrade to the latest 8.5.x version is so buggy it would actually cause more problems.

- Even one of Meraks biggest supporters and the admin of there biggest community who has over 20 years experience with mail systems and is in close touch with the developers, is now telling users not to upgrade/purchase merak
For me and the best of my clients, I am calling it quits !!! I am out of here, moving on to alternate software and telling my all clients to jump ship and request a refund for recently renewed support and upgrades.

From another happy customer
But after sitting at a server for months on end, being yelled at by customers who walk around the corner to the next service provider, it is obvious the joke is on us.

If your really serious about it then please read the forums above, as you will get a very good picture about the quality of the product. Even though we have paid for a years worth of upgrades with them, we havent upgraded to a new version of merak since january, even though theres features we could really use, the software is just too buggy/risky to install.

EDIT - there was a very big security exploit on there webmail system back in late jan/feb, they took about 5 days to acknowledge it and a week or two before they even patched it........of course in a version of softare which contained bugs to other things :(, as the webmail server had already been hacked, we had to have our webmail down during this time until the patch was done.

Thanks for the info Toytown, thankfully we havent purchased it yet, so you may just have saved us several thousands of pounds.

Any ideas what you guys are going to move to instead?
