Merc C-Class thoughts?

spend half the budget on an older 204,

old man has a 320 cdi utterly brilliant motorway mile muncherbut I wouldn't be dropping anywhere near your budget on one.

Picking up a C220 later today for a trip up north this weekend.

Had an A4 last time so it should be nice to compare. I'll let you know how I find it

I've had my 2013 220 cdi Sport AMG plus for a few months now and I'm still loving it.

For what I paid I struggled to find anything with a BMW badge that impressed me like the C.

Gearbox is a little sluggish but its a comfortable place to be and considering the wheels and tyres the ride is very defined and not crashy like some of the A4s I drove.

It can seem a little bit "blingy" inside but I certainly prefer it to the low spec 320s I also looked at.

Personal preference I guess.

Presumably that's one of the things though. Your Merc was relatively better optioned than equivalent priced A4's and 3 series?

Probably because the A4 and 3 series are better liked, in general, so hold their values better. They all cost much and such the same when new.

Yeah, paid a little more than than the OP but I was only just managing to get into 3 class prices which I thought were very much over the top.

Got mine at just less than a year old and saved nearly 16k off the book price.

Love the aggressive lines of mine over the new model - the 3s didn't do much for me either.

The C class interior is bad for a car of this class, too much Vauxhall Astra going on in the design. The 3 Series is hardly a masterpiece but at least doesn't feel stuck in the last decade.

As it's been out for so.long it's a good 10k choice but I don't get why people are happy to spend twice that.

Having not had the pleasure of being in an Astra in the last 10 years, I fail to see how it could be compared.

I agree it might be too much for those who prefer the "reserved" design of the 3 interior but its certainly not what I would expect from a Vauxhall.

Again - all down to personal preference really - I found the 3 a dire place to be for the price tag that accompanied it.

It's that centre console that does it, with the radio buttons etc. Very similar to the old Astra.

Plus that screen is tiny and poor resolution (there is a small one on the 3 too but also least you have the option of a better one)

I can't say I use the centre screen a lot - other than dial numbers. I use the screen in the centre of the speedo much more. Not sure about the resolution but its a million times better than the screen in my old Qashaqi.

Just googled the astra interior - I see where you are coming from - It's a similar layout.

I can't say anyone has said to me "Oooh looks like a Vauxhall in here"

That'll be the 9 year old Astra Fox is referring to. Funny Mercedes taking styling cues from Vauxhall. Sure the Merc is blacker, but there you go. Not the interior I would be happy with in a £20k Merc.

The speedo screen is okay though. A bit yellow for my liking (reminds me of an old smokers wallpaper sort of colour). But then it's not my car, and that's why I didn't buy one having looked at them. The E-Class is almost as bad in all fairness.
