Mercedes R Class and alternatives

Yeah it's not exactly pretty but then again I'm coming from a Volvo XC70 so probably about par for the course :p

The interior design is much better, feels like it would make a great continent crosser.

The wife wouldn't have the AMG - it's the 3.0 V6 diesel. Considering her opening gambit was a Grand Picasso I'm happy with the compromise!

Spec isn't bad. All the usual MB bits but it has the upgraded media package with screens in the rear and wireless headsets. Should keep the kids happy.

Rather one of these than a soul destroying MPV!

I think they have a quirky look to them that isn't entirely unpleasant, quite aggressive from the front.

It is an MPV really though? Just in a more "estate" form than a "van" form. That doesn't have near the same space as one of the bigger MPV's though.

I looked at these before I resigned myself to a newer model grand scenic. I think the middle seat not being isofix was the no-go for us. Even in the galaxy etc unless you put the child seats side by side (using the middle seat), you won't get an adult in the back.

How much if you don't mind me asking?

The Volvo plus a bit which equates to roughly £17k depending on how the Volvo is valued. Includes 4 new tyres, a service, and all MOT advisories fixed (cv gaiter degraded and corrosion on brake pipes). Pretty happy with the deal given the condition of the car.

I guess it is an MPV but feels more like a big GT or limo in the back. The seating position is more like a typical saloon car in that it is laid back when compared to the relatively upright feeling position that MPVs generally have.

I was quite impressed by the engine. Tonnes of torque from about 1200rpm. I struggled to get it above 2k rpm on the test drive!

Picked it up yesterday...

A few niggles aside (loose front passenger headrest cover, dodgy parking sensor) it's certainly meeting the desired objectives quite well. It's a few steps above the Volvo when it comes to refinement, and the room in the rear is fantastic. I've always wished they'd make LWB versions of typical estate cars yet this seems to be one of the few that actually fits the bill...even though it's not an estate car. Or is it? I don't know but I like it :D

Is that the only angle you have ?

That photo is pretty much identical to the one above. Need more pics

I still think these are pretty cool in a unique way. They do tend to look like raised up estates rather than MPVs.

That said, the wheels look utterly tiny for the arches :p

My sister just chopped in her R350 CDI, she loved it, had it from new for 5 years and had totally trouble free motoring. Most I had in it was 5 adults but had loads of room. She's now got the GLE 350d Designo which feels smaller than the R.

The GLE is a 4-door 'coupe' rather than a van, so that'd be why :p

I didn't get a chance to get pics before the car seats went in, but here they are anyway.

If it give any idea of scale, those are 20" wheels. It's a behemoth :D
