Any body work in the merchant navy or know someone who does? Would be interested to hear anyones opinion on it as a career, thinking about doing something different; as my degree is fairly useless now (property surveying) until the economy turns around.

Cheers.

my dad's in the merchant navy, has been for in excess of 30 years. he's currently a 2nd mate, but has been a master onboard a few ships.
i myself am going through a sponsored training programme leading to employment (if i find a job) as probably 4th Engineer.
As for training, im currently in Glasgow's GCNS (Glasgow College of Nautical Studies) there are 4-5 throughout the UK from shetland, to newcastle, to southampton and some other places. It's vital (after i look back on the start of my course) to check out the competition. I went with ClydeMarineTraining who pay me £170 per week at college and £125 per week while at sea.

EDIT: it takes 3 years to train a merchant navy engineering officer, or 3 and a half as a Deck Officer.

There are SSTG (which pay handsomely), Maersk, and other such as BP, shell. I'd maybe advise applying to BP/Shell if your interested in having a good training programme. Most of the training companies send their students to colleges in the places mentioned above. Any other questions just ask :)

Regards Stephen
