From the days when I used to rip my DVDs I have a whole folder of films in the format:

Film CD 1.avi
Film CD 2.avi
etc.

Is there a tool/program out there that will go through this folder and merge each film into one file?

Avidemux is about the best option to concatenate video files simply as you can get it to do the work without transcoding the source. Beyond that, you get into writing shell scripts to drive command line utils.

Some more 'raw' files can be simply put together with copy commands, TS files for instance - not researched VOBS.

AVI files, the best thing to do is rip the container apart and glue the video and audio streams back together then put back into a new container. Avidemux will do that, just need to choose the right settings. Mediainfo will help with that.
