Merging AVI files

Can you good OC peoplel recomend me software to merge multiple avi video feiles into one, or to convert avi files into mpeg and then convert into one long video. Thanks. I've tried Movie Maker but I don't think that does it

I use that simply for stitching a few files together, mainly .avi.

Virtual dub is excellent for joining 2 parts of an Avi then, use WinAvi to convert into Mpeg.
