I have a hp laptop and i got a proof of license on the base of the laptop has shown in the link below

i got a friend of my mine to give me a copy of his windows xp cd so that i could repair windows on it using my own serial number as hp didnt provide me with one, however when i come to enter in the laptops serial number it says the serial code is invalid, did someone copy my serial number or could it be to do with the installation cd itself?

ive ran windows genuine software on my laptop before and it didnt show any problems, and due to the serial number being incorrect i cant even exit the repair program, therefore my laptop is totally frozen

the installation cd is for windows xp pro and the serial number i have is for xp pro as well so as far as my knowledge goes it should work, anyone have any ideas?

It's due to the installation media not matching the serial number - for example: XP Home serial key (sorry, I can't see the picture you've linked, it's blocked by my proxy :() and XP Pro cd or something like that. You need to make sure that they are the same version.

Also, you might want to check that the installed serial matches your sticker (try RockXP or something similar)

You'll be needing an original HP XP Pro CD that matches the laptop and the laptop key.

as ns400r says you will need a HP OEM version for you key to work

correct

some manufacturers have their own keys given by MS, so you'll need the right media for it (ask your supplier for the media, should be under ten pounds)

HP
Del
Ibm?maybe

do this

Acer and i think old Nec keys don't but they have their names on the badges

I have successfully used a standard XP home OEM cd with a Packard Bell serial number, so I'm not convinced that is the case... it failed activation, but a "quick" call to MS and it was up and running.
