Lewandoski was the best player last year and got robbed but Messi carried Argentina to the Copa title and had another good if not great season in an awful Barcelona team.
Would've preferred Jorginho to either but it's always based on individual rather than club achievements so I don't have an issue with Messi winning it.

Random thoughts in no order.
It’s an individual award but there’s always the X won Y argument like Jorginho this year or Modric a couple of years ago. Yet Ribery didn’t get it a decade ago.
All very bizarre.
Then there’s the fact that Messi has been the best player in the world every year since 2009 apart from 2012 or 2013 can’t remember which year it was when he was injured. There wasn’t a year when Ronaldo was better than him while the two where in La Liga (again apart from that year). Yet it’d be weird if Ronaldo didn’t have multiple awards. 2008 he was and Kaka was standout the year prior.
Lewa should have won it last year based on what he achieved and followed it up with this year but he’s not a better footballer than Messi which is what this award is meant to be right? Then they go and create this award for Lewa. Pathetic.
Or is it meant to be the player whose had the best season on the best team? Does international football take priority? I mean there’s no flipping way that Jorginho is the 3rd best player in the Chelsea team let alone the planet. Someone like Salah has been/is sensational but didn’t win anything last year - collectively or individually.

It more than likely got wrote into his PSG contract. After all it is all done by the French now and PSG owns Uefa as well. Total farce. Every man and his dog knows Lewandowski should have got it.
Messi have been utterly poor since going to PSG so will love to see what happens next year ballon d'Or.
Ronaldo was top scorer in Serie A last season 36 goals in 44 apps at 35/36.
Mason mount and Mahrez all finished higher than Bruno Fernandes who managed 28 goals and 21 assists last season. Mount managed 9 and 9...........

Again some clarity is needed. Mount won the CL. Mahrez won the league. Bruno won the same as me. So it’s clear that you have to win something for this individual award.
Messi was sensational last year. He won copa America and was the first player ever to be best player, most goals, most assists and win the thing in a major international competition. He had a way better international season that anyone else and that seems to get a lot of traction in this as well.
It’s probably wc > euros/copa > cl > league? You then get the edge if you’re brilliant in them.
Verane won the lot one year as well but didn’t win anything. So who knows

If you compare Messi and Lewa for last season their stats are pretty close and Messi was playing in a pretty terrible team, and as mentioned he lead Argentina to win something

Yeah, for every explanation you can offer for why player X is in position Y there are 5 other players who fit the same criteria who have been ignored.
