messy case syndrom

This is my antec solo with a non modular PSU and I think its pretty tidy:

However, I have since changed the HDD power cable so that it "loops" down and hides itself.

Best I can do with my antec P182 using 5 hard drives:

I guess I could connect the 5 case fans to the PSU and hide the cables behind the motherboard but then I wouldn't get any control over the RPM.

Oooh I only have 2 HDDs but my DVDRW is SATA so...

temp dropped about 5 degrees... going to do a proper session today or sunday

edit.. second attempt I managed to cut off half the 120mm fan cable near the cpu cooler lol..

Yeah, especially when you have that many cables! I really dont see how so many people can get in to such a state though, unless they just do not care at all and go for the easiest way to plug something in!

I find cable management the worst thing when building computers. Even on a P182 mine are still a mess!

I thought the P182 was the easiest case I have worked with, started with the main PSU cables and device power cables, front panel/usb headers etc then finally the HDD data cables and fan cables.

That's mine. :D

It just seems that the cables are never long enough to go behind the motherboard.

The hard drive cables are just rammed in there together crushed into the gaps in the case. :D

That's a MANLY case :D

But I reckon I've got you licked....

Look at the FILTH!

Haha ewwww greasy looking dust on the heatsinks and fans! Hey look, all the HDD drive bays look like they have smiley faces on them!

You are aware that having an untidy case is bad?

It was like that when I got it!

And look what is sitting across the room, glancing at it in terror...

I'll spend some time with that one when I put it together though. TLC all the way :)

Awesome. Only thing is that motherboard has the 24pin ATX connector in the most annoying place possible (for tidy cases).

I dont think a non modular PSU is any excuse to have untidy cables. The PSU in that pic is only 400w so it doesn't have as many cables but still its a much smaller case with not as much room to hide the cables behind the back of the motherboard area so I am sure you will manage it fine :P

Winner! It's actually not as bad as it looks, most of the cables run across the near side, meaning that there is clear air between the cables and the mobo, which also happens to be where the fan points!

None of you guys had the guts to take the photo with the PC on though didja? ;)

I despise cable management :D However long I spend planning a nice, tidy wiring arrangement, it always falls to pieces once I start wiring the damn thing up, and I usually give up and do a half-assed job just to get the rig running again.

The P182 has actually helped loads - I at least managed to shove some of the worst offenders (e.g. 24-pin ATX cable) behind the motherboard tray. Not proud of those SATA cables, though :D

Back when I had a generic case, complete with ribbon cables, cathode tubes and non-modular PSU, it was much, much worse. At least now the mess is confined to particular areas so my CPU gets reasonable airflow. Temps are pretty good and the innards are only on show when I'm tinkering, so I can't be bothered to do anything about it until I rebuild.
