meta job cuts

Is this something that would even be legal in the UK? Specifically, can you make someone redundant that easily while planning to hire for that role in the near future?

It's very easy to fire staff in the U.S
Yes but specifically when you're planning on hiring again? I suppose there must be a time limit of sorts to prevent unfair dismissal, but again maybe not and this is just my UK POV coming through?

You can’t rehire in the same role, no. But I can’t remember how long that’s for.
1 year in the uk...

been through someting similar recently
i saw this osted yesterday was a bit disointed but didnt go in to the details/article

its part of the trend at the moment 5% job cuts, you seem to see it a lot around at the moment

Much harder in the US. Technically, I suppose you could go after them legally, but the expense involved wouldn't be worth it for most.

Even in the UK with stronger employee protections, the success rate in tribunals against unfair dismissal is very small and those who do win their case have often paid for legal representation.

Meta doing this is nothing out of the ordinary nor indicative of something bad. They, and other US companies, have been doing this for years, they're still multiple billions of dollars in profit. What is new is that Zuck very recently stated in a podcast iirc that this year some mid level coders will be replaced by AI. This will happen in most tech companies sooner or later imo.

Zuckerberg’s full memo to employees:
Meta is working on building some of the most important technologies in the world — Al, glasses as the next computing platform, and the future of social media.

Read on that? Backing away from VR?

You could argue that they sold more than a few quest 2's, but the glasses arguably have been more successful in penetrating toward their mainstream core audience. Certainly a product which aligns itself more with their product and service, which is where we know meta and the rest want to take us.

tbh im really hoping the Deckard comes soon and can maybe migrate

AR is just the next logical step, so no not stepping away from VR
think about the glasses aspect and the data they could collect from people who use Glasses for every day use. from confidencial information to also supplying custome ad's using AI to manage your social life and work details.
the amont of daily data collected could hel humanise AI by providing daily life activities.
Peopl can moe easily forget about glasses more than a quest 2 or quest 3.
would you take the gasses off when your in the WC? or would you do it the first few tims then after the 10th time just forget it?
add in to that, the glasses with likely have custome lens so why take them off?

Bold of you to assume I knew about them :p

I'm also going to assume you live under a rock as well.
