£640 sounds like an awful lot to dump on your first detector. I started with a Garrett Ace 250 before upgrading to a XP Goldmaxx Power. I quickly realised find rate doesn't scale with the cost of the detector. I've sold up now but if I were to give it another go I would probably go for the Garrett Euro Ace as a cheap detector that will find 80% of what the high end ones would. More expensive detectors will give you a better idea what is under the ground before you dig but as you should really dig everything anyway what does that matter?

Not sure about beach detecting. I gathered unless you buy a Minelab no VLF detector will be great on wet sand, but most will be OK further up the beach where the finds are too deep :p.

Gone with a Garrett at pro international and a Garratt pro pointer.
think this will do the job as its fully waterproof and can be used in the sea.
