First of all, where do you plan to use it? If it’s mainly on beaches, you’ll require a different detector than one that gets used mainly on soil.

In all seriousness, find a local club and that’s where you’ll get the best answers.

Over the course of a few years, I’d occasionally seen signs on the side of the road in different places locally saying ‘CMDC’ and it was only after watching Detectorists that it struck me that the signs were for the local Metal Detecting Club. I stopped and spoke to them once and what a friendly bunch they were.

I can’t recommend a specific detector but the usual giveaways are:

- distorted guitars;
- intense drumming; and
- an audience that is generally overweight.

Rural fields, we’re moving to a house that has a small woodland attached, budget max £500 if it made a big difference over something lesser. My grandson is very interested and I’ve been slightly interested
