Metal Gear Solid 4 Review Database

Or go back on topic - how the hell did this game get those two 8/10s? I'm stumped to be honest.

I'm guessing the people that reviewed weren't into the long cut scenes. Its a real shame to down grade it for that. Although, the drebin cut scene was way too long, even Payton tried to cut that part down abit.

This thread has gone so far off topic lol!
Anyway just to carry on the off topic thing, as sony is funding and helping KP and Konami on the MGS movie, I doubt very much it will come on the 360 for a long, long while. Also the money involved re-porting it to the 360, spliting the game down into smaller sections for the mulitple disks, lowering the audio quality and redesigning parts of the game i dont think would be worth it. Those who are concerened with PS3 game sales should stop looking at just the NPD numbers but the worldwide figures. For example DMC4 on the PS3 outsold the 360 version by about 200K ( roughly 20%), that is a "sony" game, GTA4 has about the same attach rate for each console with the 360 having a 1.5 million lead but with 6 million more consoles sold. As for MGS4 sales, well Ryan Payton will be happy, it looks like it sold approx 1.3 million copies day 1, and doubled PS3 sales for the week.

well said .... this ^^^^

I have checked out some of the reviews, one of those being the Eurogamer one.

Now, bear in mind I've no intention of playing MGS (only because I haven't got a ps3, and that will change). I'm no 360 fanboy either, I hate most of it's premier titles -- Halo, GoW, PGR, Dead Rising, etc etc. So I consider myself fairly neutral. But the Eurogamer review comes across as objective and honest. It speaks highly of MGS, but at the same time there's no creepy Hideo reverance, or slavish devotion to the series.

You might be disappointed with the score they gave, and that's fair enough, but the Eurogamer review is the best one of the lot. And as 4 pages, it's thorough too. Far better than others that only offered two pages of gushing drivel.

I know that, but playing through the game was such a completely different and liberating experience that for the first time since I started gaming in the Atari/Commodore days, I can't 'get' why those two reviews scored to eight, which is still a high score of course, but the scope and expanse of the game transcends anything that's came before, and may not be topped this generation.

You have to see from both sides of the fence - just reading the review and saying 'oh it's better worded' means nothing if you haven't played the game itself. The score isn't about how well the review is written, after all. There has never been such a clean and strong sweep by a single game that overshadows the entire generation it's in.

8/10 is fair. I'd give it a 9 personally, but can see some would knock it down due to some flaws and not so stellar sections. I constantly alternate between 'omg this is amazing' and 'that could be better' while playing MGS4. Some cutscenes are ridiculousy long - I had about an hour and a half spare for gaming yesterday and, on starting Act 3, must have got about 10 mins actual gameplay (and that was dodgy on rails vehicle action).

It's anime teenage angst ridden melodrama. There's nothing wrong with liking the MGS story, but it should be a guilty pleasure for anyone over 15 ;)

That's only your opinion though. Not everyone is seeing what you see. That doesn't make them wrong and you right. I'm pretty sure Eurogamer weren't trying to cause controvery by only scoring MGS 8. It's still a very good score and in the written part (which is far more important than the scores anyway) they gave it props. So whats the big deal?

I didn't say I like the review because "its better worded".

Also, I'm fairly sure FF7, Gran Turismo, Ocarina of Time etc etc also got generally stellar scores with a few 8's and 9's. There's no shame in it and it just further illustrates my point of everyone being different. That's something to be celebrated, not knocked.

It's very much the big discussion that happened on the 1UP podcast and spilled over to NeoGaf.

3 reviewers have given it an 8; Edge, games(tm) and Eurogamer. 1UP gave it an A-. Your view seems to mirror Shane's on the 1UP show, when he argued that it takes the medium up a level, it should have been awarded an A+ and how it's changed his views on the world. Garnett and others have argued that this is itself the reason why he didn't review it.

To MGS fan boys this is the greatest thing ever made and no one can or should dispute this personal experience; it's a good thing. Others have found fault despite it's sublime technical brilliance; non-fans but have still enjoyed the game (8 is not a bad score). Here lies the rub. To the MGS fan (PS fan) the game was, let's be honest, always going to be the game of the generation (so we've been led to believe) and get and deserve 10/10. As an objective review perhaps the A- is closer to the point.

Thing is garnett as ever is a total clown ! Moaning about he dont understand how to do stuff thats in the manual, maybe he should read them and not act a troll, it is partly why he is there though i guess. One question abooie have you finished MGS4 yet?

Thing is Garnett is a multi platform gamer; he said many great things about MGS IV but made a few criticisms, Shane was even more of a fan boy than usual however and shot down such nit picks (such as why can't I play it without reading the manual) with "you're a peasant for not agreeing it's the best game ever made". PS fanboys are worse than Nintendo ones this generation.

No I've not played it. I've followed it's production (as I generally only follow multiplatform gaming media) but as I've not played any other MGS I haven't felt a huge desire to play it.

As I've said though I think it's great that it's a fantastic title and I also feel it's about time the PS3 had more titles of this quality. Games are a personal experience and just because I think such and such is the game of the generation doesn't mean it is to all people. MGS4 was written for MGS3, 2, 1 players and it was going to take a lot to spoil the party; just as it was going to with Halo. It's just as a neutral I'm listening more to Eurogamer, games(tm) and Edge than I am people wanting to call people a peasant for not arguing MGS has changed their life.

For you and many it's a 10, deservidly.

I'm not the biggest MGS fan ever, I only played MGS1 through once, played the first section of MGS2, and missed MGS 3 all together.

However, this is the second best game of all time after Resident Evil 4 and nothing released on any console comes close to it so far this generation.
The only way this game could be better was if it featured Leon S Kennedy and Zombies at some point.
