Can anyone tell me which order i should play these games in? I have played and completed the original MGS on the PS1.

Now I am baffled with the array of choices -

mgs2
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 2: substance
Metal Gear Solid 3: snake eater
Metal Gear Solid 3: subsistance

... is that the right order? Do I need to play them in that order to understand it, or is it one game rehashed as a cash cow?

It goes...

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Substance is a remake of 2 with loads of extras
Subsisdance is a remake of 3, again with extras.

The Substance games aren't exactly re-makes, but they're usually just loads of extras on top of the normal story driven MGS game.

MGS 3: Snake Eater/Subsistance
MG 1&2
MGS/Twin Snakes
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty/Substance

I think thats the right order, story wise. Twin Snakes was a remake of Metal Gear Solid for the Gamecube, extra scenes but same story. Substance and Subsistance are the same as 2&3 but with extras. There's also Metal Gear 1&2 which were released on the MSX/NES, they are set after MGS3 which is a prequel and come on the 2nd disc of MGS3: Subsistance.

Phew :D

In my opinion, games wise it's always best to play them in release order, as that way you'll appreciate stories better, as usually prequels are designed to change the way you think about parts of stories in earlier games, if you get what I mean.

I agree. That's why i put them in release order. I don't think i would have half enjoyed MGS3 as much if i played it before MGS 1 or 2.

And ig uess they're not remakes... just put the word there because i couldn't think of a better way to describe them :p :o

I never bothered with substance but I might get subsistance because it has ports of the first two MG games. I'd like to play them at some point so I have a bit more background knowledge of the series.

The originals do don't they? Maybe that's only if you've already seen the cutscene on a previous playthrough though.

do the 'remakes' allow you to skip the cutscenes?

If you don't want to watch the cutscenes, maybe you should be playing a different game?

Play them in the proper order.
Ideally it would go

Twin snakes (NGC)
MGS2: Substance (ps2) (was better than xbox version cause of framerate issues and the controls were slightly better)
MGS3: Subsistance (ps2)

DO NOT play MGS3 before youve played the other 2! It'll ruin the COOLEST twist EVER in a videogame...

If you have MGS3 subsistence you could play MG1 and 2. MGS1 doesn't do a great job of filling you in about the previous games' events. So it would be worth playing those first if you don't mind playing through NES era games.

He he i could be pedantic and say the thread title says metal gear SOLID, or I could say its not worth the ballache playing those crusty old games. Just jump on the internet and read the story of those two relics :p :p

Without playing them I still feel like I could be missing something relevant even though I have read the basic plot on the internet. Anyway you shouldn't dismiss a game just because the graphics are a bit out of date. Some of the old FF games are still some of the best RPGs around.

It's not just the graphics I'm dismissing. You try playing a REALLY old MSX game for a story, when you've got 3 of the greatest EVER video games to play. They just don't cut it anymore...

Get the original ps1 version of metal gear solid, not the twin snakes version, the music on the gc version is awfull, what were they thinking changing the great original music to crap, they also altered some of the cutscenes so they aren't as cool as they used to be.

Anyway play the games in the release order because mgs3 ruins the ending cliffhanger in mgs2.

Ok maybe if you hadn't played any of them before you wouldn't want to wait until you've finished the old ones before playing the new ones. But if you've already played the other 3 then why not try them?
