Ok, so sorry if this is me having a dim moment but I've just moved into a new property and need to take a meter reading (previous properties I lived with friends and all of that was dealt with by the main tennant), now I understand that you have to read the first number if it's between the 2 but what about when it gets dead on? (as per the middle dial)

I read it as 40187 or is it 40287 (or even something else)? I'd expect the dial to be closer to 3 instead of 2 if it was the latter.

Can anybody shed any light on it?

If the pointer on any of the dials is between two numbers, record the lower number.
If the pointer is exactly on a number, record the next lowest number - unless the pointer on the dial to its right has just passed zero.

So first dial is almost on 4, but second dial has just passed 0 => so first number is 4.
Second dial is between 0 and 1 => so second number is 0.
Third dial is exactly on 2 and 4th dial has not just passed 0 => so third number is 1.
Fourth number is between 8 and 9 => so fourth number is 8.
Fifth number is between 7 and 8 => so fifth number is 7.

So 40187.

That meter is ancient. They came and replaced my meter for one of those small white box lcd meters as they said my old meter was old, but looked newer than the one in the OP.

what ever you do dont dismantle a old HD and accidentally let one of them magnets stick to the side as this may make the disk thingy spin slower.

Who's idea was it to have some dials go clockwise and some anti-clockwise? You shouldn't have to look in a manual to read a bloody meter!

You don't need to look in a manual to read it :P the reason they do this is because is a simple gearing mechanism behind the face plate. So when one cog turns, it moves the one connected to it in the opposite direction :D
