I am thinking of having a punt on this and was wondering what sort of framerates I can expect with my rig:

Asus Rampage 2 extreme
i7 950@ 4.4ghz
Custom water set up
12gb RAM
128 SSD
MSI 6950 twin frzr 3

Will it be playable on high on s 23.6" monitor @ 1920 x 1080

metro is only hardware-demanding with max settings.

Yes but maxing all the settings out will grind it to a halt as mentioned.
Edit: With a single 580 i could max it out with playable framerates if i sacrificed 2xMSAA for AAA @ 1920x1200.

IMO great game really enjoyed it, really looking forward to the next.

As others have said enjoy the game @ playable framerates dont max it out, or it will become jerky etc. The graphics are really stunning though ENJOY

I haven't dared try Metro with max settings but it looks phenomenal on high, no need to max it out.

As said above, switch off Advanced DoF and you'll be good to go.

My rig in my sig gets 27 - 40FPS everything FULL and that is on stock clocks at 1920 x 1080

Btw Take a look at Metro Last Light, its the new one! There is a scene where he is on the train. Check out the cloth covering the boxes.... it is amazingl! Look perfectly realistic!
